Nagging pop-up window to upgrade DVD

Feb 25, 2004 5:36AM PST

After reinstalling Windows XP Home, I get a nag screen repeatedly, with the following message:
"Windows detected a DVD decoder that might be incompatible with your system. Select one of the following options:" I don't need or want to upgrade because my DVD is working fine. But nothing I do prevents the message for coming back.

Any ideas?

XP didn't come with the DVD player.

The big clue missing here is what DVD player it's complaining about. Make and version please?

It is a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-7500. I have tested it and it works fine, but the nag screen is from the Windows Help & Support Center (unless it is a fake; the software update is from InterVideo? and they want money.)

Why would this be so persistent?

Software maker, but no version.

Best of luck, love to look at this one, but details are what makes this work.

How was the DVD drive installed ? Did Windows detect it and install it using its generic drivers, or did you have to 'insert the disc' ? Was there any notice about 'drivers signing' ?

Go to "device Manager";
Remove the dvd drive;
open case, disconnect the drive;
boot the system a few times.
Go into setup and make sure PNP is enabled.
re-connect the drive;
when windows sees the drive click on "have disk" and let windows find the drivers on the install disk, or direct windows to the driver on the disk.

Before taking any drastic measures confirm that the problem is not due to the Intervideo installation. Remove the Intervideo software that is sometimes installed when playing certain DVD's. Use Add/Remove.

Have you looked into MSCONFIG?
Mar 7, 2004 9:18PM PST

I've found, with certain applications, it'll load on startup- often nagging me to register etc. Type MSCONFIG in your RUN box, and see if you see an entry that relates to the program- could be it loads on startup so your DVDs will autoplay- and also nag you to upgrade. Uncheck it, and hopefully the problem will go away. Good luck.
