Resolved Question

Mystery black box....

Apr 27, 2018 10:15AM PDT

Hi

Not sure where this discussion should go. Perhaps someone can direct me.

The last couple of days have had a black box appear in the right bottom corner of my screen with a "settings" gear icon on it supposedly from Microsoft.

It says something like something not quite right, I may have to change my Microsoft password, and click "here".

Nope, not doing that. Has anyone else had that issue?

Thanks.
Phyllis

Hit Enter button a few times

There's a setting in windows 10 that will cause it to ask for a password change about every 70-75 days, unless it's disabled. If you hit Enter a few times, it should keep the same one and just say "password reset".

"Password expiration is a feature
in Windows that forces a local account on the PC to change their passwords when a specified maximum (42 days by default) and minimum ( 0 days by default) password age has been reached.
This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable password expiration for specific local accounts in Windows 10.
You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable password expiration."

I understand it better, thank you all for taking the time to help.

I thought it might be a virus trap or something.

Grateful, Phyllis

In am still very confused......
Apr 30, 2018 5:19PM PDT

I am really confused. I am 75 years old. Is this for the screen where you put in a password to get to the account screen (home page) in general?

Is this the "Main Screen" that comes first?

Does it have to be the same as Microsoft.com log in?

I did try hitting enter, but when do you hit enter? Sorry, old brain not getting this at all.

I am afraid I will be shut off without help.

Thanks for any advice.

Phyllis

Trying for a bit more clarity....
May 4, 2018 11:20AM PDT

What i am addressing is there is of course a password required to log into my laptop on the Lock Screen.

I seem to remember back some time in having to have it the same password for the lock screen as my password at the Microsoft site.

So, when a password is required by Windows 10 to change again, are they talking about the password on the "Lock Screen", and do I have to go to the Microsoft site and change it to that same new password?

I hope I have expressed myself more clearly. They used to be required to be the same, I think (this was a few years ago).

Thank you, Phyllis

local vs email acct profile

If you have an email address with microsoft mail system, then it would be the same password, but you can create a local account and give it any password you want.

Question on your reply?
May 5, 2018 5:31AM PDT

I guess I have an email on the Mircrosoft email system, if I understand what you are saying. I am not very savvy on the technical expressions.

I have Windows 10, so I am assuming my email system is through the Microsoft system? I am not sure what you mean by "an email address with microsoft mail system".

Please excuse my naive lack of terminology here, If the above is correct the way I am seeing it, then I just need to change my password at Microsoft and that would be the password I log in with?

I feel really stupid here, but trying my best....very old brain in my head...I am 75.

Thanks for the help.

I think that's correct
May 5, 2018 11:20AM PDT

You can try that, see if it works for you. I did Beta testing of windows 10 and then quit using it, but I do remember I had a local account and when I signed up for an email account with microsoft, I think it was through hotmail at the time, suddenly it became the signin for windows 10, even though I had not authorized it. From what I've heard in forums it does the same thing. Personally I use Linux Mint as my preferred OS. Maybe Rob can give you more info on those accounts, but I personally was greatly turned off by what Microsoft and Windows 10 did at that time.
