Mysteriously Changing Icons

I have a newer Dell XPS 400 with XP MCE. When it started up this morning all my desktop icons were essentially little blank white squares, (Okay, rectangles). Also, my Start Menu had morphed into some configuration I'd never seen. The icons were gone there too.

After doing a few CNET searches I resorted to a ''Restore'' but still didn't notice any improvement.

Eventually I did a manual ''Change Icon'' on everything that would change and have now gotten back closer to where I started.

I can live with what's there now but my question is...What caused this and how do I prevent it???

Again, Thank You in Advance for your help and advice.
