Mysterious cd-rom drives magically appear!

Aug 15, 2006 12:10PM PDT

Boy oh Boy, have I got a brain teaser for anyone willing to help me! Let me start with some basic information about my computer. I have Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005. I have 1 Maxtor 80GB SATA HDD and 1 Maxtor 120GB SATA HDD. They are not configured for Raid. Also 2 HP DVD740 DVD RW Optical drives. 2GB DDR2 Mushkin Memory, Intel Pentium D 930 3.0Ghz processor. Recently, I opened "My Computer" and found 2 mysterious cd-rom drives! I did not install them and they were not installed as virtual drives. I have searched add and remove programs, I have searched system hardware, registry etc., etc., and I cannot find any evidence that the 2 cd-roms actually exist! I have checked on the internet to no avail. Also, I think that these "ghost" drives are actually interfering with the performance of my physical dvd/cd roms! I am at my wits end! If someone out there has experienced this, and has a solution, I would be in your eternal debt. Please help!
