My Wireless Nightmare

Mar 6, 2005 9:42AM PST

Well here's hoping someone can help. We moved to a new condo complex, and I set up my wireless network. Try to keep the flames to a minimum, but it's a Microsoft router. A neighbor has an unsecured network with a good signal so his network always shows available. I simply set my laptop to choose my network first and life is good. My wife however has conflicts. Her laptop will never connect automatically. She shows both networks available but to connect to ours she must go to wireless zero config in services and change to manual, and then connect in the wireless network dialog box EVERY time she starts the computer, or wakes the computer from standby. This procedure has taught my wife how to curse. Here's the kicker: at our office she connects automatically every time, avoiding "the procedure". She's tried blocking the second network at home and "zero config" tips from other boards to no avail. Of course since I've had networking classes in college she thinks I know the fix but am instead working a plot to drive her insane. The truth is that I haven't a clue what to try next. All she now wants out of life is to automatically connect to our home network. If any of you have any ideas, I am open to them. All machines are running XP Home.

Loss of Internet connection

Same problem... Set my Windows Zero file to automatic an properties to restsrt failure one time..it worked sometimes until I used an Error Detecting software to eliminate some 300 errors. Now it is working. I can logon with the internet connection up and running. I found expert online support to be of no help...they don't have an answer. Maybe I was just lucky!

The drive nightmares.

I have no answer and I might know something about Wifi, Tcpip and more. What I do know is that one machine I have can select which WAP to connect to and ignore the others in it's drivers provided. Windows Zero Config on a new laptop doesn't offer this dialogue box or options.

As such, there is no answer that an expert can supply that will apply to the wide variety of machines and drivers.

Pan them if you wish, but your complaint should be with the Wifi industry and it's omission of this needed feature.
