General discussion

My windows folder just disapeared

Jun 18, 2007 6:52PM PDT

Strangelly i waked up one morning and found my WINDOWS folder gone...
my windows is installed on drive D: ... i typed in D:\windows and it worked but the folder isn`t visible even if i go to the "Show hidden files and folders" tab under folder options.
i think the problem may be a changed registry key `cuz i`ve been infected with subseven2.2A, startpage.BK trojan,Flooder.Mailspam.VB.L trojan but got the system clean out.
i also used tuneup utilities 2007 to clean the registry ... still nothing
i used a game accelerator too (i think this messed up the system)

but what can i do to make the Windows folder visible again ?

Is The Computer Still Operational??

If so, then the Windows folder of importance is still there.. Why are you typing in D:\Windows? Are you unable to access it through Windows Explorer?

Which operating system are you using? Are you sure the D drive is the actual boot drive of the computer? Most machines have Windows on the C drive. Have you looked on the C drive for the folder?

I suspect you haven't fully removed your malware problem.. Please describe what you have done to clean up the machine.. Which tools?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Yes the computer is operational

I`ve installed windows xp sp 2 a long time ago on drive D: because drive C: was stuck (got that fix but didn`t reinstall windows) that is why i`ve typed in Windows Explorer "D:\windows" and yes... it`s all there... but why can`t i see it when i go to drive D: in the Explorer ? no programs can see this folder too Sad

I`ve used NOD32 anti`virus system v2.51.8 to clean drive D:
i also used TuneUp utilities 2007`s Registry Cleanner and StartUp Manager to clean the registry (but it only cleans not fixes the registry)

I`m running Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service PAck 2
Version of control comp: 5.82.2900 (what is this ? hope it`s helpfull)
RAM : 767 MB
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+ (1659MHz)

Should i use an other av to check if nod32 did his job ? if so what do u recomand ?

If The Computer Is Operational, The Windows Is Still There..

..but using those registry cleaners isn't always a good idea.. Remove the wrong registry entry and the computer can be disfunctional.. In addition, although you mentioned "Show All Folders", please confirm that you've opened Windows Explorer, click on "Tools", select "Folder Options", then click on the "View" tab and place a CHECK mark in the "Show hidden files and folders" and then UNCHECK the boxes next to "Hide Extensions for Known File types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files", then click on "Apply", OK, etc.

In the meantime, please download, install, update, then run the free AVG Antispwyare program from the link below.. When it comes to viruses and spyware, running multiple tools is sometimes necessary to ferret out all the infected items.

Ewido/AVG Antispyware 7.5 Tool

Next, click on either, or both of the links below and run the free online scans they provide.. They're give you a "second opinion" in regards to NOD32.

Housecall Online Scanner

Panda Online Scanner

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

well... it got fixed

my "windows" folder appeared. don`t know how ... i`ll investigate

caktus ... i know where my "windows" folder is ... i`m no noob ... the problem was i couldn`t see the folder tru Windows Explorer.

Grif Thomas ... i already had "Show hidden files and folders" & "Hide Extensions for Known File types" tabs as you said... but the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" i`ve left it checked ... and the folder just ... reappeared after 2 days.

The only thing i can imagine is that it had the hidden attribute, but i didn`t know how to change it without Windows Explorer`s left-click on the folder (if i can`t see it ... i can`t click it Sad )

I think my bro got on the system and might fix the problem... i`ll ask him later.

Thanks a lot for your time Grif. Bye

Have you used "Search for files and folders" to find the location or path to the Windows folder?
