Question

My USB drive has an error. Please help.

Aug 9, 2019 5:17PM PDT

drive turns off unexpectedly. cant open or move files. try to repair drive, but when i reach the actual repair part my usb shuts off-tells me the device is not recognized or malfunctioned. put drive back in and it tells me there is a problem with the drive. -i tested another usb and it functioned normally, so the problem does seem to be this particular drive.
would like to be able to recover the data from it, but all recovery software i have seen is paid, and i dont have money right now.
Please help me. i just want my files back.

As to recovery software, RECUVA is free with lots of tutorials on the web.

BUT... If the drive is powering off we may need to replace its case or put it into a new case DEPENDING on what it is.

Try RECUVA and in this case, other PCs.

tried using recuva.
most files are listed as unrecoverable with the comment "this file is overwritten"
i was able to recover two files, but only one is able to play (files are mainly
.mp4 videos) thanks for what i have been able to get. i'll keep trying with recuva until i have a better solution.

Once overwritten they are gone.

No recovery app can recover files that had that happen.

No backup copies? Seems odd with only a 16GB stick to not have backups.

had a few backups that are safe, but the computer most of the files were also on crashed recently (and of course nothing could be recovered)

i've been able to recover most of the files using the deep search and they are playing correctly, but the messed up file names are going to take a while to sort out. i can probably get the rest of them from someone else if i can't fix my drive.
