My turn - I need Suggestions

Dec 16, 2003 1:32AM PST

But PLEASE spare me your compassion Happy
I'm travelling from sunny Southern California to the Arctic region IMO of Pennsylvania next Tuesday. ( near Philadelphia) My problem is I don't own anything that could be considered cold weather clothing. As I want to limit my luggage to carry on and I don't want to spend a fortune on stuff I won't use again for years can I get help from the natives in selecting essentials? I haven't been back during cold weather in almost 20 years. I'll be staying through the New Year and don't wish to freeze to death.

I truthfully wouldn't have thought of that. Good suggestion.

Purpose for your visit?
Dec 16, 2003 1:47AM PST

Hi Patrick,

Would help to know if you will need dress or casual clothes during your trip. Also, will you be outside a lot or mostly just between home/work/establishments?

My general suggestion would be "layers". I'm thinking you probably have a light jacket or could make use of a light fleece pullover (casual) or raincoat (more formal) in Southern Cal. A couple of long sleeve T-shirts or "thermal look" shirts can be worn under light shirts/sweaters/pullovers. Even two worn together is kinda the style and the air between layers traps heat. I would also suggest a few cotton sweaters or vests -- adaptable to cool nights in So. Cal, but again can be layered for warmth. I have a raincoat with a zipout lining that can double pretty well as a more formal winter coat or light fall/spring coat. If you're going to be trekking, get yourself a couple of pairs of insulated socks. You can convert light loose-fit pants to cold weather gear with "long johns" -- course us women folk (at least me) sometimes do this with pantyhose but ... Look for stuff with Thinsulate -- as long as you aren't sporting pink and powder blue linen, I'm sure you have lots of stuff in your current wardrobe that can be "winterized" with the right undergarments. Make sure to have gloves and either a scarf, hat, hood, muffs, or whatever you feel most comfortable sporting to keep your head, and particularly neck & ears, warm.

Of course, my hubby would probably suggest packing shorts just in case the mercury spikes up over 50 HappyHappy

Hello Evie,
I'm going to visit my mother who has been ill. She will probably have the house temperature set one or two degrees below the point of spontaneous combustion so layers makes sense. I'll probably spend some time running around with my brother (6'3" 150 vs me 5'9" 2?? = no help Happy) I'm also follicly (sp?) challenged to the point where I have given up and just shave it all off so I will need a nice warm hat. Thanks.

Hi, Parick,

Evie's suggestions re: layering are solid ones.

As an option, go to:

www.llbean.com

and check their "on sale" items. They have had some outerwear at good prices. A down vest is another option.

Whatever you do, wear a warm head covering (also for the non-follicular challenged as heat is lost through the head) (many parkas and jackets come with hoods). Mittens are warmer than gloves.

Bean's "three season jacket" can be worn in cool temps, and in cold over a sweater, I am comfortable in mine at 24 degress. They have one on sale right now for $34.95, and it sounds like it will fit you. It replels precipitation quite well, and dries quickly. It should wad up into your carry-on quite well, and is not too heavy to wear on the plane.

I order from them on-line a lot!

Hope your mother recovers soon!

Thanks Angeline. Unfortunatly I am currently Internet-less and hating it. I'm switching home providers and the equipment hasn't arrived yet. I don't have it here at work simply because I haven't asked for it. No real need. I can get to SE through a hole in the company Intranet. They allow the use of CNEt help forums and obviously haven't found this one yet Wink
I expect the modem this afternoon so I'll check the Bean site. If I like it I can have it delivered to PA and avoid carrying it one way.

Well....

SE folks sure jump in to offer help, so that could help with the company. Happy

Seriiously, there are computer questions asked and answered on occasion.

Cable or DSL modem? Congratulations!

DaveK asked you in another thread if you are Tam's husband (she moderates Feedback). As you live in CA,I'll let him know you are not.

Actually going back from Cable to DSL. I have used both but I think I like DSL better. I had more problems with pop-ups on the cable but that could have been the ISP. Once I downloaded the Google toolbar they disappeared. I answered Dave's question in that thread shortly before it disappeared. Thanks for the early birthday wishes over on Steve's thread. Have a happy holiday season.

Hi Patrick,

I hope your mother will be feeling better soon.

If you plan to spend any time outdoors you'll need a warm hat, gloves and a pair of boots in case it snows. You can layer your clothing - a turtle neck, vest and parka would be appropriate.

Best wishes for the holidays.
