My taskbar programs are displayed twice

Dec 15, 2004 11:36PM PST

All running programs are shown twice on my taskbar and i dont know why. I had this problem a few months ago too and what I did to fix it was go in the registry/HCLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/EXPLORER/STREAMS/DESKTOP
There were 2 keys here Default TaskBar and Default Taskbar Personal. After deleting the 2nd key the problem was fixed. A couple of weeks later i had the same problem on my 2nd pc. I did same thing fixed again. Now after a couple of months same problem appears and no personal key to delete this time. So i just deleted the Default Taskbar Key and problem is fixed. But what do i do if it happens again? Why is this happening.

Here is a picture of my taskbar if it helps u

To me, that's just the TASKBAR HEIGHT.
Dec 15, 2004 11:50PM PST

If the taskbar is unlocked, one can adjust it so it's just one line of tabs high. Takes a little practice to move the mouse to the top edge of the taskbar and click-drag it down.

Have you turned off the language bar?
Dec 16, 2004 12:45AM PST

As to the "S" word, no one wrote that. Since this is the newbies forum, I have to cover off that resize itme. Your first image showed a somewhat normal 2 high bar. So that's my first response. Your new image shows the issue clearly.

There is another trick and right click on each toolbar to see if a Close Toolbar appears such as we see at http://www.leadtools.com/Utilities/PrinterDriver/images/Image24.png

You may not want to close the quicklaunch bar.

Yes i did

Sry i forgot its a newbie forum. I'm not a newbie though i've been a computer technician for 10 years so it kinda irritated me. Yes closing all toolbars was the first thing i did. Didnt help.

No Close toolbar doesnt appear on any of those 2 bars they r both considered to be taskbars by the system i believe.

Thanks for help so far.

Double "Quick Launch"
Dec 16, 2004 9:38PM PST

A. IMHO, your screen shot looks nothing more to me than that you have two Quick Launch bars running/loading at the same time -- a new one on me. At least the two pair of vertical bar I see is an indication of this.

B. For the registry address you gave, I believe it should be the following at least in Win98, with the values shown (periods are placed there for clarification only):

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Streams\Desktop

(Default)
. . . . . . . . . . .(value not set)
Default Taskbar . . . . . ."long string of Binary alphanumeric letters
Default Toolbars . . . . . ."a Binary value consisting of eigth double-numbers"

C. Since you gave no operating system:

1. In Windows, the "Taskbar" (Click to see an example screenshot) is the place where users find the Start button, taskbar buttons for their open applications, the clock, and other utilities. With Internet Explorer, the taskbar has become extensible to support expandable, dockable, layered browser toolbars. Plus, custom toolbars can contain any sort of content, including application shortcuts or Web pages and support for full dragging functionality.

2. The "Quick Launch toolbar" (Click to see an example screenshot) is:

a. sitting between the Start button and the taskbar usually -- depends on certain options and other programs

b. a handy toolbar making it very easy to launch some of Internet Explorer's applications

c. a folder (c:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch) containing a shortcut/folder of anything represented on the Desktop and customizable by the user. To arrange the icons, right-click in the right pane and choose arrange icon by.

Note: Configuring the taskbar and toolbars is as simple as enabling one or more Address, Links, Desktop, and Quick Launch toolbars on the taskbar by right-clicking anywhere on the taskbar, pointing to Toolbars, and then selecting your brew. However, please be advised there is no reason whatsoever that working at the Quick Launch folder itself (Windows, Application Data, Microsoft, Internet Explorer, Quick Launch) may in some instance be more convenient.

3. What is the Quick Launch toolbar? - It's really "an extension of the Start menu" and allows a user to quickly and easily launch applications and specialized utilities right from the taskbar, just by clicking an icon. By default, during the installation of Internet Explorer, icons are placed on the Quick Launch toolbar and added to the folder which lets a user launch Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. In addition, the toolbar may contain other icons for accessing the Desktop, other "simple traditional Windows shortcuts", and "specialized shortcuts for other utilities".

a. Adding items to the toolbar:

Since the Quick Launch toolbar works with traditional Windows shortcuts, adding items to it is as easy as drag and dropping.

An easiest way to place an application shortcut on the toolbar is to copy a shortcut from the "Start menu". For example, adding Microsoft Excel:

From Explorer/My Computer, open the "Start menu" folder and locate the Excel shortcut.

Right-click it and hold the right mouse button as you drag the shortcut to the "Quick Launch" toolbar (Click to see an example screenshot). When you drop it (releasing the mouse button), a shortcut menu appears. "BTW"! Notice that vertical bar which separates the toolbar from the rest of the open windows area? It can be moved right or left on this toolbar by holding the mouse over it until it changes into a double-headed arrow. Then, while holding the left mouse button pull it either left or right so it changes places with the icons.

Warning: If a program shortcut is moved from the Start menu to the Quick Launch Bar or to the desktop, other users may not be able to see the shortcut in the XP Start menu (Ref: Q307105 below). Also, if you move a shortcut from the Quick Launch Bar or the desktop to the Start menu, other users cannot see the shortcut in the Start menu.

Or, add "My Computer" to the Quick Launch toolbar:

Click the Show Desktop utility on the Quick Launch toolbar to minimize all open windows in order to access the Desktop.

Right-click it and hold the mouse button on the "My Computer" icon.

Drag the icon to the edge (right or left) of the Quick Launch toolbar and release the mouse button.

From the resulting context menu, select the Create Shortcut(s) Here command and Windows will add the "My Computer" icon.

Note: E-mail link in the Start menu can be customized on a single-user basis, as can any shortcuts in the Start menu, Quick Launch toolbar, and desktop. However, the default e-mail program cannot be set on a single-user basis, [Q309292].

b. Resizing the Quick Launch toolbar after adding additional icons to accommodate the space available for displaying additional icons.

Note: If the Quick Launch toolbar is not large enough to display all shortcuts, a ">>" (double arrows) button is displayed, which indicates that the toolbar contains shortcuts that cannot be displayed within its size. When clicking the double-arrows button, the additional shortcuts are displayed.

Place the cursor over the "vertical bar" just to the right of the "Quick Launch toolbar".

When the cursor changes into a double-headed arrow, drag it to the right to lengthen the toolbar space.

c. Remove items from the toolbar:

Simply right-click an icon, select Delete from the context menu and click "Yes" in the "Confirm File Delete" message box.

d. Repositioning the toolbar:

Place the cursor over the "vertical bar" just to the outside edge (left or right) of the Quick Launch toolbar.

When the cursor changes to a double-headed arrow, Mouse-click and hold. Drag to the right or left depending on how begun. Stretch to a size desired and release the mouse button.

e. Moving Quick Launch on the Toolbar:

If it is preferred that the Quick Launch toolbar sit on the left side of the taskbar next to the system tray rather than at its default location (next to the Start button), place the cursor over the vertical bar just to the left of the Quick Launch toolbar. When the cursor changes to a double-headed arrow, drag it with the mouse to the right.

4. The "Specialized Utilities" (Click to see an example screenshot) Show Desktop and View Channels:

a. These utilities are Show Desktop and View Channels, and are files with an extension of .scf that can be seen only in the file's properties -- so don't go looking..

b. During the installation of Internet Explorer, two copies of each file are installed by default.

? A copy of each reside in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch folder and is the actually the source of items that appear on the Quick Launch toolbar.

? Second copy resides in the C:\Windows\System folder as backups.

5. Note: If either or both, the Show Desktop or View Channels icon from the Quick Launch toolbar get deleted, become corrupt, or is missing in action and you want an icon showing for them, simply copy the correct file from the C:\Windows\System folder to the Quick Launch folder. Else, [Q190355] and [Q195737].

6. Check the system registry values at the following keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
GrpConv\MapGroups

Note: Its string value in the right window should be similar to: - Quick Launch "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Policies\Explorer\ClassicShell

Note: Its binary value in the right window should be: - ClassicShell 01 00 00 00

? When the Quick Launch toolbar is viewed, icons may be missing or unavailable and the Toolbars command are useless when right-clicking the taskbar if the above key value is set to 0x0000, [Q273785]:

7. Please note, if the Microsoft PowerToys TweakUI utility is installed (Control Panel), certain IE options are available. Specifically:

a. Shell enhancements - the shell enhancements feature was added after Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

If this feature is disabled, then the shell will lose many of its enhancements, such as Active Desktop, Web View, folder customization, the QuickLaunch bar, and the ability to right-click the taskbar.

b. Allow changes to Active Desktop - Enable this option to allow the Active Desktop settings to be modified.

If you disable this feature, then the options to customize the Active Desktop will be hidden from the user.

c. Allow Active Desktop to be turned on/off - Enable this feature to allow users to enable and disable the Internet Explorer Active Desktop.

If you disable this feature, then Active Desktop features (including stretched wallpaper) will be unavailable.

Note: #c above may be an option wanted and again, maybe not.

8. If you don't like or you want to change the icons displayed in QL, browse to C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\QUICK LAUNCH where you'll find .SCF files instead of the normal shortcut extensions. Open with Notepad, and change the IconFile= to your own choice.
