Question

My system restore points are deleting themselves?

Jun 24, 2014 8:23AM PDT

Hello, I'm having a serious issue with my system restore points. They are being deleted. Not all of them at once, but one by one. They can be less than a week old and they get deleted.

I've tried to solve it by uninstalling defrag software (which seemed to help at first), resetting system restore by turning it off, on, and then using a restore point, and making the system restore point gigabyte usage larger (which it hasn't even come close to the regular allotted 4%), and I've even reinstalled Windows 7. Nothing has seemed to really work.

Can anyone please help me? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Clarification Request
(NT) did you try pushing the allotment to say 50%?

No.

No, I have not tried that. What would that do? I assume you say I should try that?

There is no try?

Sorry but the alternative answer is to reload the OS?

PS. The other old restore thing.

Turn it off, turn it back on so it starts fresh.

I've tried that.

I've tried that several times.

Answer
That's normal

That's normal. Those restore points are free, they consume disk space. Lots of disk space sometimes. As the amount of disk space allotted for such things fills up, older restore points are deleted since usually system restore is for undoing recent changes, not changes made weeks earlier. Either you increase the amount of disk space available for this sort of thing or you accept that the way things are now are the way things are going to be going forward.

Wait?

So it's normal for system restore points made a week prior to delete themselves? There's plenty of space available.

Or an update from Microsoft obliterates them.

I can't guess what you know about SR. It has quite the history and lots of folk don't know how it works. Frankly, can you give a quick summary of how it works?

I read you turned it off and on but did you give it a lot more space?
Also, some antivirus suites break it. To me that's just a bad suite.
