Question

my ssd is almost full ! what should i do?

Mar 23, 2015 3:34AM PDT

I have a 128 gb sad with my boot drive (and some drivers on it) it's at 119 gb full... I also have another internal hard drive 2 tb for applications and downloads. But my question is every time I execute a program (winrar. Application installs. Etc) it take up space on my ssd even tho I specifically save the application to my hard drive... How do I free up space on my ssd without deleting crucial boot/system data? My ssd is not a Intel so I cannot use Intel's data migration application. Also I don't want to install a 3rd party data migration tool because I don't have the money to buy a bigger ssd at this moment in time.

Time to keep trimming.

The OS and drivers are not 119GB.

You are correct that apps will install on C even if the installer is saved on another drive. That's been true for years. We have to pay attention during the install to see if any option to save elsewhere is possible.

Why not just make your boot drive the big drive?

Re: SSD full

Last time I saw this on these forums, the System Restore area was set (to the default of?) using 50% of the drive. That's 64 GB with you. If that's the cause: turning of system restore deletes all. Then set it to the usual 5% and turn it on again.

My Windows 7, Windows user accounts, swap file, hibernation file. recycle bin and about half of my installed programs take less than 50 GB on my 64 GB SSD. No problem, although it needs some management now and then.

Windows has a disk cleanup tool.
Let it run a scan and see what it says.

Grab a copy of Ccleaner.

Don't forget to check the list of installed program on your computer and uninstall the ones you do not use. This will help you to free some space on your SSD.

Well if you don't CCleaner as mentioned before will work. The DIsk cleanup tool will remove temp files that are left after installs.

Also if you page file is set for C drive it may be better to point it to D and let Windows decide how much.
