My Samsung phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth keeps turning off

Feb 23, 2018 5:09PM PST

Hi everyone, I have a Samsung S6 phone. It has been a good phone for reliability. It always works when I need it. But in the last 12 months I often find my Wi-Fi is turned off. This gets really annoying. I have looked at all the settings I use and cannot figure out why this is happening. Also, my granddaughters gave me a Tracker for my key chain. Yes, I often cannot find my keys. I was thrilled! Of course we tried it out at different distances etc., and it worked very well. Also the little Tracker tile has a button on it that you can push to find your phone! I love that. Last week, however, every time I would try to find my keys, nothing would happen. I tried to use it to find my phone. Nothing. But while I was doing that, a few times my Samsung Gear Fit Pro watch buzzed with a message. it said my Bluetooth was turned off! All I could think was, here we go again! Does anyone know what might be causing my Wi-Fi and Bluetooth keep turning off? I'm hoping someone here will give me some ideas. I'm beginning to think I will need a new phone! My battery runs down very quickly, and due to having a mind of its own, I'm wondering if it isn't just having all these glitches because it needs replacing. Thanks for reading this.

That's it!! You nailed it!

The most probable cause is the battery since when the battery gets very low the phone goes into power save mode and the FIRST things it does is turn off WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. AND - when the battery gets recharged they do not get turned back on - you have to do that.

The only thing you can do is to get a new battery. They do offer higher than OEM capacity batteries - BUT some of those don't include the NFC antenna - so you lose that function (if you need/use it) - so read the ads --- and reviews -- carefully before ordering.

For now that's all you can do. Maybe SOMEDAY they will come up with a near adequate battery - but I'd bet that's 10 to 20 years off!!

Also remember with today's battery technology even the BEST battery is good for only about 400 cycles - so if you charge it everyday - that's a little over a year. And despite what some may claim - overcharging is not a good thing - I've measured charge current - and when it says CHARGED - it only reduces the rate - it does not stop charging. (bet I get LOTS of flames on THIS part!!).

IMHO

Hmmm...
Feb 24, 2018 5:58AM PST

I don't know if you'd call this a "flame" exactly, but my wife and I used a pair of Galaxy S5s for over three years, charging them every night, and neither battery ever weakened noticeably. Of course, in the S5 it would only have been a minor problem if it had weakened, because it was removable and replaceable (which was one of the reasons we kept them so long), but still...

S5 great phone and battery

Ditto here , have just upgraded to the S8, S5 just worked!
S5 was charged each night and normally never dropped below 80% charge

Do You Use Bluetooth Applications?
Feb 23, 2018 9:29PM PST

I read somewhere that, if you put Bluetooth in "safe mode" that 3rd party apps could crash the network. An example they gave over and over were OBD II engine checkers. If you have one of these, try removing the app and see if the problem goes away. If the BT is constantly getting hit, that might explain your battery issue as well.

Maybe battery, maybe apps...
Feb 23, 2018 10:27PM PST

Batteries do need a replacement after 2 years. A spent battery may be causing this, maybe apower saving mode kicks in and shut off connections. With these sealed phones, the best bet would be to take it somewhere. If you have a Best Buy in the area, find out if they are one of the many that perform repairs for Samsung. If not, one of these after market stores that you can find everywhere, but I'd make sure that it's a reliable one.

Then, bad apps? You'd be surprised at the crazy things that some pretty reputable apps that went bad did to my phone over the years. You may want to try wiping your phone and starting clean, reinstalling apps one by one, as slowly as possible to have enough time to test the phone before you add a new one. Make sure you save all data residing in your phone (make sure your contacts are not saved on the phone!) take screen shots to remember what you had just in case and wipe the phone.

I've had the same issue!
Feb 23, 2018 10:44PM PST

While I've not lost my Wi-Fi capability, I do lose the Bluetooth connection in my vehicle. I've learned to live with the "hands free" benefit of having my phone automatically recognized when I start my SUV. I did a chat with Samsung and within 15 minutes they had it all working just fine. They cleared my Bluetooth and reset it. I did use the Smart Tutor app to connect with them, but it was quick and clean. I assume you've already tried working with Samsung.

Probably is a weakened battery
Feb 24, 2018 6:17AM PST

When the phone goes into energy saver mode, it turns off all but the telephonic external communications to conserve charge. It does not turn them on again during charging.

My wife's WiFi turned itself off without warning once on her phone and she started watching some streamed HD video in our living room, where we are normally connected via WiFi. It burned up our whole monthly data allotment in a very brief period which we only discovered when the "low data" warnings appeared on all the phones of our family plan. A call to Verizon Wireless resulted in a free two-month doubling of our allotment, so all's well that ends well, I suppose, but we've been careful ever since.

The S6 was a big mistake by Samsung, removing some of the features that made the S5 the best phone of its time. They corrected one of the two big mistakes for the S7 -- the elimination of the MicroSD card slot -- but retained the other, the no-longer user replaceable battery.

I would strongly suggest ditching the S6 and getting an S8, which will drop significantly in price beginning next week following the introduction of the S9, which is only an incremental improvement. For one thing, the battery is quite robust; even an entire day of heavy use usually only takes it down to about 50% or so. I have an S8+ and LOVE it (but don't EVER drop it -- it is the very epitome of Dilbert's "BSB" smartphone design concept: "Beautiful, Slippery, Brittle"). I will keep my S8 until G5 capabilities arrive next year, probably with the S10.

What? The Samsung S7 does't have a MicroSD card slot?

What? The Samsung S7 doesn't have a MicroSD card slot?
Well, it is news to me because I have an S7 Edge and it has one.
You just have to read the manual to find it.

They put the SD slot back in the S7. I have one too.

Happened to both my son and I for months with Verizon Pixel.
Mar 5, 2018 6:31AM PST

I noticed that we were eating data like crazy for months on my Pixel phone and my sons Pixel phone.. The wifi would shut off without our knowing and not turn back on until we manually turned it on. I also noticed that a ton of apps were using background data all the time, especially since the phones were switching off the wifi. My theory is that they pushed something through in an update. After much frustration and having manually shut off the data on purpose, MAGICALLY the issue went away (about two months ago I think). We went many months very close to going over our data without even actively using it. I wanted to tear my hair out and never got any good answers from Verizon. I have turned off "background data" on 98% of my apps in case this occurs again.

Conversely, my husbands non-Pixel phone was not doing this (older model Droid turbo). It was also Verizon and on the same wifi.

Had this problem with LG G3
Feb 24, 2018 8:59PM PST

My trusty LG G3 started having this problem a couple of months ago. My forum-searches suggested a hardware problem, namely that the relevant chip, which on that phone at least, supports wi-fi and bluetooth) may have de-soldered itself. Most of the suggestions involved disassembly, and either inserting some cardboard to force better contact or applying heat to melt the solder so that it would re- flow. Not wanting to do this to a phone that was otherwise working, I instead purchased a replacement online for $65, complete with a 30-day return policy. I transferred stuff to the replacement and all was well for (wait for it) 31 days. Then it blue-screened on me and refused to restart, recharge, etc. The problem wasn't the battery (I have spares). So now that it was completely dead, had nothing to lose, and was past the return period, we followed the instructions found online for removing the motherboard and baking it in the oven. To our surprise, the fix worked (it's been about 2 weeks now). We may cook the initial phone at some point to see if that fixes the wi-fi & bluetooth problem.

Please do not forget to keep your battery away from the cooker before you bake the motherboard.

Does had the same problem, they tried fix it at repair center but not for long, after two month I paid $150 for a replacement, about two months same issue. Took out the sims card and clean it a bit, seem the problem fixed, no problem for about a month but I finally switched it to a iPhone instead.

Samsung note8
Mar 2, 2018 4:57PM PST

I'm having similar problems with the note 8 however it is my location service that randomly shuts off which control the lock when I'm at home. It is incredibly annoying. My Wi-Fi would also not switch over to my data plan when Wi-Fi wasn't available then I would loose the connection. It has been hit or miss if it will work or not. I had similar problems with the note 5. I have considered a hard reset but don't want the hassle. The problems do seem to come and go with the software updates. I have also double checked and all of the settings are correct

Try safe mode.
Mar 2, 2018 5:25PM PST

Look up on how to put your phone in safe mode and see whether the problem recurs while in safe mode. If it does not, it is likely a bad app. Same thing happened to me on a Moto X Pure Edition. I spent several days uninstalling apps, testing and reinstalling them. Finally gave up. And waited. Eventually the app was updated and the problem went away. I will never know which was the killer app.

Battery Maybe, But If Not...
Mar 2, 2018 5:45PM PST

I have ZTE BladeV8Pro with a similar problem. In my case it is not the battery. I suspect it is something related to Android (6.0.1). Very annoying, but if it is not your battery, and you find a solution, please let me know.

Yep It;s Most Likely Battery
Mar 2, 2018 8:47PM PST

I don't know what a battery replacement costs for an S6 but if it was me I would upgrade to S8. I recently upgraded my S6 to S8 Plus and the battery is an awesome improvement over the S6. I usually charged the S6 twice a day and it was a big hassle. With my S8+ I can go a full day and never drop below 45% or 50% and in stand-by (phone still on but screen off and apps closed) I can go to bed with 100% and wake up 7-8 hours later with 96% or 97%. The S6 would drop a good 15% or 20%. And in my opinion, even though the S6 is a great phone, the S8 runs circles around it plus you get a larger screen and a lot of other improvements.

Also I'm pretty sure the batteries are the same in the S8 and the S8 Plus.

My Samsung phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth keeps turning off
Mar 5, 2018 2:27AM PST

hiya Kathie,

I've been having the same issue where WiFi just disables or goes offline - even though its enabled/turned on from the menu - , and I was suspecting issues with my WiFi module on the Samsung A7 phone.

but just few days, I went into the battery optimization part, and disabled optimization on all components and parts, and for the last 48 hours the problem has disappeared.

Given, that due to this battery is consumed much quicker,, I am trying to optimize the battery without impacting the Wifi/BT connections, but it might work for you too..

good luck

The battery is not my issue
Apr 24, 2018 7:15PM PDT

I have frequent connectivity issues with my bluetooth (but never WiFi) using a new Galaxy S7 edge and Plantronics Legend headset. Not only will it just drop, but if I connect/disconnect the power cord it will also drop. It will almost always drop during a phone connection )between dialing a number and pickup). Both the phone and headset are new and charged, often fully. I have checked and rechecked my settings, but will take any suggestions that I've hopefully missed. Thanks for any help, John.

My bet is they'll have you try another headset.
