My pc won't turn on!

When I press the on button for my pc, it shows acer and acts like its loading normally, but then the login screen never comes up, it just stays a dark color.

I've tried turning it off, waiting 5 secs and turning it back on. I've also tried letting the battery run down so I'm sure it had to have shut down completely, then turned it on. No luck.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I see this is some Acer but little else. As it seems to be booting, does ANY screen at all show and did you try an external monitor?

It certainly turns on, but it stops or hangs prematurely.

And it's a laptop, I think? What make and model? How old? What OS (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8?).
Do you know how to go back to back to factory conditions, if necessary? Or doing startup repair? Do you have a Windows disk?
Does it fully boot a Windows-to-go-stick, a Linux stick or a Linux disc? And if it does, do you see anything remarkable on the hard disk?

I've had a black screen with a PC of mine while it did a chkdsk at boot. But I clearly heard the machine being busy with the disk, so I decided to wait. After 5 minutes all was fine. How long is "never" with you?
