If the correct driver is installed, and there are no errors in Device Manager, this can be caused by wrong settings (n the audio or in Windows, such as services not running) or hardware failures.

Going back to when it still worked (that's usually factory conditions, unless you installed Windows yourself) is the ultimate solution for anything but hardware failures.
A nice work-around is to buy another audio card or audio-USB-stick; those are around USD 5 and come with their own drivers.

Look under DEVICE MANAGER in control panel as Kees suggested. IF there is an error shown, yellow asterisk, etc. then attempt a driver update from that location. You didn't mention anything about the system, OS, possible changes made to system, etc. More information could help. Also, am assuming that you checked audio settings in control panel also assume that whatever you are using for speakers is/are functioning properly. Again, more information might help.

Check for what's listed as the default device

for output. I've seen where a headphone jack or USB device was set but speakers were plugged into the proper mini jack.

Make sure that all the output devices like headphoes or speakers are turned on and properly plugged in. Also check the output devices has not been put on mute.

Apart from these reason your sound driver is not working could be because your sound driver is corrupted.
