My parents (in their late 50s) need a Mac . . .

Mar 11, 2008 4:28AM PDT

My parents are both retired teachers and used Macs (and way WAY back, the Apple IIe) at work. So when their PC kicked the bucket, I talked them into buying an iMac. Unfortunately, the last time they used a Mac was in the PowerPC-era, and they are having to re-learn all the ins-and-outs of Mac OSX.

Now, they need a second computer for business . . . "bare bones," Dad said. No fast processor or graphics card, just something to keep the books. Since they're having such a hard time re-learning Mac OS, I'm thinking they should stick with Mac to avoid OS confusion. The problem, as we've heard on BOL, is that Mac is not a "bare bones" kind of company.

I see that the Mac Mini is $599 on mac.com. Any other suggestions for a cheap Mac?

The mac mini can use that display. Maybe more.

Other options...

I haven't had any experience myself, but if you need it to be bare bones, you could consider looking into a refurbished model or one of the older G5 machines, on which OS X should still work fine.
