My notepad disappeared, and I loved it......

Apr 28, 2004 8:14AM PDT

Can you help me? My notepad disappeared into thin air. I don't think it was anything I did, but am not sure. I use it all the time. When I try to use it, I keep getting a box that says "Windows cannot find NOTEPAD.EXE" I have no clue where I can download another one or whatever, could someone help me?
Thanks,
snowflakeinpa

Using Win98? Try SFC at the Start/Run command and restore a copy from:

"You can get notepad.exe from Win98_46.cab on your Windows disk."

Are you sure it is missing?

Maybe start/find notepad.exe might show if it is still on the machine.

If not, on this w98 machine it shows in c:windows so what I would do is use system file checker (sfc) and extract notepad.exe and place it in c:windows.

If it is still on the machine then maybe the short-cut is pointing to the wrong location.

Hi Grif!! I did what you said, just to check out if I had that worm or any other viruses etc. but it was clean. Thanks so much for the info. I came back here, because my notepad.exe is missing again!!!!! Every scan I have done, shows no viruses etc. I don't understand why notepad.exe file keeps showing up missing. It's just too wierd for me...I don't know what to think.(I will download it again at the site url that tufenuf gave me, but this is so stupid)!!
Thanks!!

Try making it "Read only" and see if that will prevent it from disappearing again.

To be on the safe side, search your hard drive to see if you have a program called Note.com and a new Notepad.exe file that is 120,320 bytes long. (Every copy of Windows has a smaller copy of Notepad.exe with the same date as other system files: do not delete it.) These show your PC has the virus.

Port 139 is one of the ports used by NetBIOS (Windows networking) for file sharing. It is scanned by a worm program often known as Note.com, Trojan/ Notepad, Qaz.Trojan, QAZ. worm, or W32.HLLW.Qaz.A
