My new LA55A950 TV

Mar 13, 2009 4:35PM PDT

Hi I have had a professional colour calibration done to my TV and it has hi-lighted an issue.

The TV has a tendency towards green. The Calibration was done with the user menu's, these are the settings:-

Picture
Mode Movie
Backlight 4
Contrast 98
Brightness 40
Sharpness 5
Colour 41
Tint G52/R48

Detailed Settings
Black Adjust Off
Dynamic Contrast Off
Gamma 0
Color Space Native
White Balance
R Offset 24
G Offset 25
B Offset 22
R Gain 25
G Gain 21
B Gain 33
Flesh Tone 0
Edge Enhancement Off

Picture Options
Color Tone Warm2
Size 16:9
Digital NR Off
100Hz Motion Plus Off
Blue Only Mode Off
Smart LED On

Setup
Energy Save Off

However after setting up the TV for the best/balanced responce for gray scale tracking, I still notice a green tinge to the mild shadowing on some TV shows and movies I have watched.

Is this something that can be rectified by a Samsung technician with service manuals and access to the advance menu's of the TV?

I would be disappointed if this was a problem that couldn't be rectified.

Thanks in advance
Laurens

wildpig953,

Any television will have a minor push towards any one of the three primary colors. This can be rectified by either dropping the green gain in the menu settings (recommended), or having a professional calibration done where the menu settings are adjusted from the service menu.

I would call your professional calibrator, and mention this issue and have him adjust it out. It can be done. It might take some time, but those are precisely the reasons why people would hire a professional calibration technician.

Keep me posted.

Thanks for the Reply HDTech, sorry for my delay with the following questions(been on holiday).

If I understand your reply, I would need to buy a service manual for my TV, is that correct?

Or is there another way to get the information about the Service Menu and its adjustments?

In australia we have only one guy who is ISF Qualified(trainer as well) and has the equipment, he travels to most of the capital citys every 10 weeks or so to do this work.

Thanks again, its nice to have someone to bounce these questions off

wildpig953,

No worries. The website is open 24/7, so it's always at your convenience. Happy

This probably wouldn't be addressed in a service manual - since it doesn't necessarily have to do with "repairing" the unit. It's up to you, but you might save your money since it has more to do with "tuning" than it does with "normal operation". Though, it may assist you - but those manuals aren't usually outlined as a "book of secrets", but logical repairs. Even so, I don't recommend the average person go into the service menu. The television set is yours, of course, but there are too many ways to cause more problems than what you already have.

Is this ISF fellow the one who calibrated your television?

If "everything" had a green push (like skin tones that you just couldn't adjust out), I might think it was just a service call. But if it's just with shadows on, say, an SD channel, you're probably leaning towards having the unit calibrated - OR it may be poor signal quality filling in *A* color that happens to be green.

Keep me posted.

It is great that your so helpfull, rare these days.

Yes, the ISF fellow is the one who calibrated my TV.

I definatly dont want to play with service menus as I know how complexed they can be. The ISF guy even said he usualy doesn't touch service menus unless he has to.

Yesterday I received my samsung Bluray player BD-P1500, played Constantine DVD and like the TV and Vista MediaCenter, some pictures with low light and soft shadowing, like beard stubble and face contours have a green hue. all other types of scenes are good.

I was thinking Service Manual as I thought it would contain the details of the Service Menus and lists of adjustments and what they mean, I used to be an electronics technician (Samsung and sony warranty repair agent about 15 years ago).

I think i'll give my local Samsung repair agent a call and see if they have colour calibration equipment(i doubt they would).

I am unsure where to go with this, I am not convinced a warranty agent would see this as something for them to fix. I dont belive the tv is broken, more like a fine adjustment is required. I am leaning towards the idea of getting the Calibration guy back again and get him to delve into the service menus.

Different HDMI input?

You mentioned getting a new Blu-ray player. Did you plug it into a different HDMI input? The "settings" are per input (even SD and HD OTA have different settings). Have you tried a different HDMI input?

Ahh yes, thats right the ISF guy said to use the same settings for the TV's internal tuner for my BluRay when it arrive's.

I had forgotten to setup the different input.
It is setup now and is a whole lot better. The green is ever so faint now for the DVD.

Thanks Pickle
