My new IMAC 20

Jun 4, 2007 6:37AM PDT

I contacted B. Proffitt regarding this issue and he suggested I take it to the forums, so here goes.....

Message

You've helped me many times with your posts in the past and thought I'd ask a
question of you....I purchased a new IMAC 20inch...my
first Apple buy. The machine is beautiful but I need help...

How can I transfer my data directly from my old HP Pavillion a1250n Media
Center PC to my new IMAC. Obviously the fastest direct connect would be best.
I've heard that the email WAB from my old computer to the IMAC does not work
well.

Do I need a specific piece of software to make this move possible, and what
type of cable do I need. i just want my files switched over as quickly as possible.

Thanks for your time, attention and help.

Sincerely,

Bronc1

Network

If these two machines can currently connect to the Internet at the same time, you already have a network and the two machines are already connected to each other..

If they cannot access the internet together and you do not have a
switch or hub, you could use an ethernet Cross-Over cable to connect the two machines together. Available at most computer stores.

Make sure you have an Admin account on your PC, pick a folder (My Documents would do nicely), and share it.

On the Mac, under the Go menu, choose Network. You should now see the PC in the list. Choose it and enter your Windows username and the password when prompted. (This is the username and password that you would normally use on your PC)

The PC should then mount on the Mac desktop and you are free to drag whatever is in the Shared Folder to the Mac.
Only drag files you have created yourself, nothing .exe will run unassisted on your new machine.

Let us know how you get on

The old PC will not show up on my old monitor even though both seem OK....so I do not know the admin number for the old PC....they are only about 18 months old...is there a way to bypass this situation? Only one is connected to the internet at a time....I await your response....thanks again!

I'll try and do that and post back....will I be able to do it though despite not having a visual reference on my old PC?

Thanks again.....

Sorry, that's new info.

If the screen is gone, no display then we'd have to fix that fix or....

Remove the old desktop's HARD DISK and put it into an USB HARD DISK ENCLOSURE like this one -> http://www.geeks.com/products_sc.asp?cat=1035

With the drive in such an enclosure you can plug that into the MAC and get access to the files.

that is probably the best method to deal with this, in light of the new information.
