Beg borrow any usb keyboard and hope it does the same. If the external works, I suggest a new laptop keyboard.

Its a hardware problem if your lappy is in warranty period than you should have to change it otherwise you have to show your lappy to the company showroom.

I agree with Bob, but sometimes with Mac laptops you have to first disconnect the top case to really be able to test. I missed where you mentioned the specific laptop you have, so can't offer up any help on that. But generally speaking ever since the shift to Intel CPUs, the keyboard on Mac laptops has become an integral part of the top case, and cannot be replaced separately.

It's usually not an awful repair bill, probably in the $200US range for parts and labor, but depending on how old the system it, might just be better to use it as an excuse to buy a new one.
