Jun 25, 2004 8:09AM PDT

For Newbies:
I learned most of what I know the hard way. I now do tech support and try to pass on a little knowledge in hopes that you won't have to.
I have been collecting these goodies for quite a long time. I have used most of them myself. All are free--and free of adware to the best of my knowledge.
If I am repeating anything from another post, please excuse, I just copied & pasted from my own list.
Also added some cool "extras" that I hope you like.

TIPS & TRICKS
If you have 2 or 3 separate windows you are cross-referencing at one time, go down to the empty part of the taskbar (at the bottom of your screen/desktop),right-click, and choose Tile Windows Horizontally.

F11 key will make your browser toolbars disappear for more viewing space (F11 again to return them).

Hold down the Ctrl key while hitting the letter key for the following:

Ctrl-n to open a new window (it will look the same until you type in new address) or right-click on a link and choose ?open in a new window? if you want to keep the last page handy.

Ctrl-w will close the current window

Ctrl-f will bring up a nice little search utility to help you get to the information you are looking for quickly?helpful for finding something in a long page or list.

Ctrl-a to select all

Ctrl-c to copy (highlight area or text first)

Thanks for the great information.

Just a note. Although you have every right to post this type of "tip" on the forum, (it's great info although much of it has already been posted here) I would appreciate it if you added this type of tip to the already started "A Few "Tips" for Computer Newbies" thread at the link below. Doing so allows me to keep the "Tips" thread at the top of the page for all the users to see. It also keeps your tip visible for visitors to the site.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6121-0.html?forumID=45&threadID=22053&messageID=238454

Read through the tips that have already been posted in the thread and if you have something new to add, simply add it to the bottom of the list.

Good job and thanks for your help on this.

Grif

Re: AVG programs
Apr 5, 2007 5:33PM PDT

Hello,
My name is Nanette, and as most of you, I have had to learn things the hard way. One AVG program I stumbled upon was Grisoft AVG. Even for those just learning a computer, this program is easy to install, and will actually dial up your computer, if you are still using dial up. I was stuck with dial up until this year when my Dish Network came out with DSL, and so I treated myself to a new Voodoo Envy 151 laptop. The first thing I am going to do is take out the Norton it comes with, and put in Grisoft's AVG. It is continually changing it's download program, and it just keeps putting in your programs twice a day, and when I heard that they could actually configure it to dial up, download and disconnect, I couldn't believe it. Finally my computer was completely protected, and I didn't have to do a single thing. Also, it doesn't get full as it dumps the last ones, and if they are really nasty vermin, they just put it back in again. Whereas other programs, you have to take it out, put in a new dll, then put the program back in. Very poor way of doing business, having to keep taking out and then putting back in programs. Haven't had a single piece of vermin since I got the Grisoft AVG, and it actually found some on the first run through that Norton had Missed!!!
So for me it is going to be Grisoft (c) for All my computers. You can even download a free trial (a years worth) and if you buy one, you get one free. The license is also good for 2 years, not one, so getting 2 for the price of one on both counts, is better than any other AV I have ever seen.
Thanks Grisoft, wish I had found you a year ago!
Take care everyone, and make sure if you use Defender to make sure that you run your System Volume Information at least twice a week, I've found that is where they like to drop Drop Spam and other dialers.
Take care and happy computing,
Nanette
