My laptop dies EVERYTIME I try to run a Norton virus scan.

by JohnWOwen / August 8, 2005 1:58 AM PDT

Greetings all,
My eMachine M5310 running Windows XP dies (powers itself off) everytime I attempt to run Norton VirusScan, and also when I run two more programs.
With the Scan, It gets part way through the scan, but it then dies in about the same place (timewise) through the scan.
It seems as if when Norton "looks" at some particular file, there's a bug that kills the system.
Sometime on the restart, there's a problem and it requires 2 or 3 restarts before it starts properly again.
It will run FINE for weeks, if I don't run the scan, or the other two situations.
The other two are: When I attempt to do a C: drive backup, and when I attempt to sync my laptop with my HP PDA.
Any thoughts on what kind of bug I have, and how to get RID of it, without doing a full system restore?
Thanks and good computing!

If you are having problems at other times besides when scanning with Norton, it MIGHT be another issue other than a "bug" but to find out for sure, I would try an online scan at one or more of these places and see what happens there.

Housecall (using IE with Active-X)

Housecall (all browsers using java)

You might want to go directly to Symantecs website.
Where you can do 2 free scans.
(If that link don't work, then just go to www.symantec.com and look for it.)
Virus detection & Security scan (both free).
It might pick up something "Norton" is missing.
Also, do you have any anti-spywear programs?
Zonealarm firewall (paid version) just updated and now includes antispywear.
Also, you can get a Free Antispywear program from Microsoft.
Another good antispywear program is SPY SUBTRACT.
You can get a free 30 day trial. (it's the full version, if you like it then u can buy it for around $30.00.
You can find this at www.intermute.com which is now owned by trendmicro.
I use all of these programs + Norton systemworks which includes Norton Antivirus.

Hope this helps.
