Try cover off, and when you get a chance perform your usual canned air cleaning.

Answer
what plug?

USB or PS/2 ? Using a PS/2 keyboard in a PS2/USB plug convertor? Other way around? Believe it or not a PS2 keyboard accesses the system different from a USB type. Best situation is PS2 into PS2 port and USB into it's own port, and no adapters used. Most dependable are the PS2 type since it's part of BIOS whereas USB is likely software controlled only, depending on the age of the motherboard. That said however, PS2 are at the corner of a motherboard and the port can come loose from the motherboard by the keyboard and mouse cords getting yanked this way and that over period of time.
