My in Box...FCC Approves Use of the "F" Word on TV and Radio!

Dec 1, 2003 1:14AM PST

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the use of the "F" word for use on any TV show or radio program, ANYTIME DAY OR NIGHT!

The FCC said the word can be used whenever desired except in sexual situations!

>>That means that real soon you will be watching a sit-com on TV, or news, or any drama or movie-ANY PROGRAM-and it's ok! Hollywood is rejoicing!

>>Soon, when you are driving your kids to school you will be listening to a song which makes extensive use of the word.

>>Shock jocks such as Howard Stern are now free to use any language, no matter how vile and repugnant, on their radio shows. And use it they will.

>>No longer will movies shown on TV have to be edited because of language.

WE MUST ACT NOW TO STOP THIS!

Please send you letter now. And please forward this letter to your email list asking them to get involved.

If it isn?t stopped now, in a few months verbal pornography will rule the airways!

Please act today. Help us get 1,000,000 email letters to members of Congress, Senators and FCC Commissioners.

Thanks for getting involved!

Thx MK, didn't know of snopes comment, however seems to be that
Dec 1, 2003 2:22AM PST

after reading...snopes does not disclaim it completely.

And snopes last paragraph:

"he FCC maintains that their statement does not represent a "relaxation" of their standards, but was a consistent application of existing rules which the Golden Globes controversy merely brought to widespread public attention. Others (such as the AFA) maintain that the FCC's statement represents an increasingly permissive standard regarding broadcast media usage of words traditionally labelled as "obscenities," and that their concerns cannot be dismissed out of hand as invalid ? especially since one of the benchmarks used is "contemporary community standards." (That is, the more one hears certain language used on radio and television, the more it becomes part of "contemporary community standards" ? is television and radio usage the chicken laying the egg which hatches "community standards," or is it the other way around?)

As always, the times they are a-changin', and the battle continues between the supporters of preservation and the forces of change."

Appears to me AFA and Snopes just don't agree on everything pertaining to this....so public can read & make up their own mind IMHO.

Wildmon is a known extremist and this isn't the first time he's....um......bent....the truth. The FCC ruling involved one incident and was not a green light to use the word anytime, day or night as he says.

The word "b***sh*t" has apparently been OK'd though as it is uttered once per episode on NYPD Blue these days. The show is on at 10:00. It doesn't bother me; it's only a word.

Pls see my comment to MK above.

Yes, the AFA may be going overboard on their interpretation. Like you say it is the FCC ruling on one incident, but doesn't the Supreme Court rulings on one incident set a precedence that other courts seem to follow.

As for me, I don't like censorship, even in some instances that is practiced by Mods in SE that doesn't involved 'bad' words. But, some preservation is required, even here.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but.......

Hey, I watch a lot of movies on satellite TV that use the F and other type words...doesn't bother me. In fact some of that can be caught while watching live telecast of some sports including boxing...the 1-2 second delay cannot always work..Wink

I know what you mean about pro sports and sometimes the delay doesn't matter, e.g. when a batter strikes out and you can read his lips as he shouts an expletive at himself.

I also remember watching the beginning of the Super Bowl last year or the year before, and as the players were being introduced, they'd high-five each other and shout things like "let's get these mother******s!" The microphone was on; surely the network knew the guys would be pumped and not thinking about watching their language.

Doesn't anybody listen to Hillary!? 'It takes a village to raise a child'!
Dec 1, 2003 2:32AM PST

HELP! The world is out of control, corrupting my child and no one cares! I can't handle it alone.

You can almost hear the screaming.

This isn't so much about the F word but society's acceptance and direction in general. Parents are held responsible for their children's actions (as they should be), however, it's getting harder and harder to raise moral, sharing, loving children and protect them from harmful associations when programers, writers, actors, sports figures (others with power and roll model status) have no concern for what goes into the minds of children. Parents are fighting an uphill battle.

Hi Rosalie,

Re: Parents are fighting an uphill battle.....Only SOME
parents are on that hill.

Kids use/repeat what they hear. If some kids are using
words/terms in school, other kids pick up on it. Where
did these kids hear this stuff ? At Home !

And, like some of the dialogue implied, if it is used
enough, society becomes immuned, and it is then considered
common-place.

It's not so much about words, Del.
Dec 1, 2003 3:14AM PST

Yes, kids pick up a lot of stuff from other kids. Words probably being the least harmful. Kids do learn from and follow their peers to a great extent, however, it's the world of adults that they really hear and which in the long run forms their ideas, morals, perceptions and concepts. For good or bad. From a child's point of view the adults are the ones in charge so what they say must be ok, right?

'Society becomes immuned and it is then considered common-place.' Yep, I think you're right. In the past the worry was that children would be raised immoral. I think the danger today is that children are being raised amoral.
