My Icons Changed

Jul 19, 2007 7:37AM PDT

Hello All,

I use coffeecup free viewer to open up my pictures.
I installed the trial version of Photoshop.
My pictures still open in coffeecup but the icons have changed to Photoshops icons.
This also happened when I installed Winamp after using Musicmatch.
How do I get my old icons back?

Thanks in Advance

Digibop, Go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types tab, scroll down to jpg and hilite it, click the Advanced button, click the Change icon button and select the icon you want. You may have to use the Browse button to locate the Coffecup.exe program and click it then choose the icon click OK/Apply/OK.

You may have to do the same for .bmp and .gif files if they're also now showing the Photoshop icon.

OK, Digibop, let's try this.

Like so many other apps, Photoshop thought you wanted it to do everything, so it associated the picture files with it.

To fix the issue, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder(s) where your pics are located. Highlight them then right-click. In the menu that'll appear, choose "Open With" and then "Choose Program." In the popup, select the program you want those files to open in and make sure that the box labeled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked. Click OK, then close everything; just to make sure, restart the PC.

This should reassociate those files with the Coffeecup viewer and change their icons.

Hope this helps,

Paul

Got my icons back Whoopie!
Jul 20, 2007 10:40AM PDT

Paul,

I tried your suggestion and it worked for all my .jpegs, but not the .bmps. The .bmps opened in Coffeecup when I double click them, but they still have the Photoshop icons.
I redownloaded Coffeecup free player again to see if that would change the icons, but it didn't.
Coffeecup is kind of strange in that it does not install itself in Program Files or anywhere else but right from the start menu, from what I could find.

I decided to check out Coffeecup more, as I never had to before. I found under the "Tools Tab" the option to Manage Associations. This is what FINALLY worked. I put checks in all the boxes including .jpeg and .bmp. I should have thought about this before.

Coffeecup is the opposite of the icon hijacking Photoshop. It even has the option to: "Restore the associated application before this application was installed." I have never seen this on any program.
I really like Coffecup and it's free, and you can do a lot with it. Check it out if you have a chance.

Now if I could just get my Road Runner desktop icon to look like Wile E Coyotes nemesis again, instead of the generic icon MS decided it should be, I'd be as happy as a clam.

Thank you Paul and Tufenuf for all your help!
