My HP 6000 series crashed AGAIN!

I have one of the known-faulty HP 6000 series laptops. It is over 2 years old, and I have already had the motherboard replaced once. It was over a year old and they fixed it out of warranty at that time cause they knew they've screwed up an entire series. However, it's crashed again - exact same problem - 3 beeps, graphics card busted, the whole deal.

My brother has the same series laptop and his recently crashed as well, but apparently when he called HP claims they have stopped fixing the 6000s out of warranty. So I'm doubting they will fix mine a second time, esp since the motherboard is crashing right at about a year after the first fix.

So my question is this: I obviously have to buy a new laptop. I liked HP in every other way - have they resolved this problem with the motherboards, or will they screw me again? Should I jump ship to Mac?

Look at the chipset maker in that model.

Don't buy that maker's chips. HP did not make those chipsets.

Also, why are you not keeping these things under warranty?

I had only the 1year manufacturer warranty and nothing beyond that. Didn't start having problems til after the 1 year was up. I have a 9yr old Compaq in which I never needed the extended warranty I had purchased, so I didn't bother when I replaced it with the HP, and money is tight. Sounds like these days though laptops are only lasting a couple years and it may be worth the investment.

Years ago I saw 6 years on good designs (bad design? those p4 HT laptops.)

Today I'm pegging the common consumer grade laptop at 2 to 4 years. There are a lot of pieces in the design with 5 year design life.

But the prices are a fraction of 10 years ago.
