Question

My Gateway laptop MD-8718u will not recognize a new battery?

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">My Gateway laptop MD-8718u will not recognize a new battery. It had been updated to Windows 7 and because of that update much of the

software (like the camera) became out of date. I went into the BIOS setting and enabled the "recognize battery" command and upon turn-on it automatically becomes disabled. Gateway has a BIOS update for Windows 7. When I tried to install it, I received a "BIOS Unflashable" message or something like that. Being a integrated motherboard, the BIOS is probably soldered to it and difficult to replace. Can anyone tell me how to get my system to accept the new battery?

Answer
Is the new battery from Gateway?

Why I ask is because of those battery fires a few years ago, makers implemented systems to lock out third party batteries.

No, the replacement was from Amazon.

It's a third party battery. I imagine that a Gateway battery is as much as the computer is worth. I checked and it's almost $80 compared to the $40 I spent on Amazon. May be worth the price. Thanks much Bob!

There are 3 parts in play here.

1. Battery
2. Charger
3. Motherboard.

At the top of the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum is a "Plugged in not charging" discussion that has some ideas.

The latest one is a hoot. They discovered that you had to not only put in the battery but put the battery lock bar over to the locked position.
