My firewalls block traffic I want

Jul 28, 2007 6:49AM PDT

I use Windows XP Home on an Enpower computer.
Zone Alarm started blocking traffic I want to allow on my computer. I disabled it because of that and because I have a firewall on my modem. PCDocPro also blocks wanted traffic.

How can I configure the firewall/"traffic editors" to allow the programs I want? There seems to be no mechanism to "unblock" or "allow" particular programs. The programs are legit, like ShoppersHotline, PCPitstop, a couple of others.

and I can go to these websites. Tell us more.

What type of connection are you using?

Type of firewalls? You should use only one. More than one conflicts with the others.

Are you using a Wireless router?

Is the firewall turned on for this?

Which browser are you using to go to these websites?

What about virus protection? Are you using Norton?

Firewall?
Jul 29, 2007 10:55AM PDT
Type of firewalls? You should use only one. More than one conflicts with the others. ~~Right now, only the one on my dsl modem, Westell 6100. I disabled ZA because I was told I had a firewall on my modem.

I was unaware that the Westell 6100 modem/router had a firewall. It does offer NAT but that is not a firewall although it is sometimes called such.

If you have ZA disabled and upon checking discover that your 6100 does only offer NAT you might consider looking in your -
%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc directory (folder) and seeing if you have a file named HOSTS (with no extension). If you do temporarilly add an extension (such as .old which would effectively rename it hosts.old) and see if you can now connect to those sites. A hosts file can and will block access.

If adding the extension gets you access then you can either leave things that way or open the hosts file in notepad and remove any lines that block sites you like.

Here are a couple links that offer help with the Westell 6100:

In my opinion, PCDocPro is more hype than product, with many false positives than many other Registry cleaners. As far as I've known the site wouldn't even permit access w/o permitting the download of an unknown ActiveX control. And appearantly that is still the case. Some of the affiliate sites will not even permit the browser window to be closed w/o redirecting the visitor to other junk-ware sites, some of them porn sites. I just found that some of the are still at it.

When it comes to reliable maintenance software, the are many freeware options. Some are RegSeeker, CCleaner and AVE free Anti-virus and Anti-Spyware.

Generally, only one firewall should be running. I don't know if that also refers to using both harware and software firewalls. Since you are using ZA, make sure the Windows firewall on turned off. In any case, the hardware firewall is probably better than any software firewall.

Open ZA and go to Program Control > Programs tab. Scroll down to the program in question. Most likely only the first two columns should be set to Allow indicated by a green checkmark.

When you attempt to access one of the problem sites, do you get a firewall alert or error message? If you get a ZA alert, check Remember my answer (wording may differ slightly), and click Allow.

Hope this is helpful.

Yes, it was helpful. Think I'll remove PCDocPro from my system. Thanks. Sue

Log into the Westell 6100
Jul 30, 2007 6:22AM PDT
http://192.168.1.1/

click on configuration

click on firewall configuration

select none.

Now the firewall on the router is disabled. Now you can just use Zone Alarm and you should be able to go to the websites.

Thanks--worked like a charm. It was already set to "None", so no problem. Sue

So now you want to
Jul 31, 2007 7:56PM PDT

go to Start

control panel

Windows Firewall and turn it off.

Make sure to turn off all other firewalls, also. Using more than one firewall conflicts and make things malfunction.

go to http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

Download and install Zone Alarm

It will ask you to allow or deny when you go places.

Now try the websites that you had in question and see if you can now view them.

I tried the link to Westell 6100 and it required authentication. I have no account with them/it/whatever. Any ideas? Sue

Someone has the password
Jul 31, 2007 5:01AM PDT

If you do NOT have one try

username = admin

Password = password

If this does not work, youo'll have to call Verizon to get the password for the Westell 6100 modem/router.
