Question

My external hard drives do not show up in File Manager

Mar 23, 2017 9:39PM PDT

I have a Lenovo W510, running Windows 10 Pro (64-bit). I just acquired a new WD 259D 2TB external drive, and when I plugged it in all seemed well, but it doesn't show up in File Manager, so I can't transfer any data to (or from) it. It shows in Device Manager, and this claims that it is working properly, but that just isn't the case.

I have a similar problem with an older Maxtor One-Touch 640GB drive, but I wasn't as concerned with it, as I generally use it on my old Dell 9400, which runs XP.
Nevertheless, it seems to me that both these drives ought to be fully functional on the W510.

Does anyone have a solution to my problem? I would be very grateful.

Rob

I have to thank the WD technician who immediately saw the cause of my problem, and provided the solution. For anyone who has a similar problem, here is the solution: In File Explorer, right click on This PC, and select (left click) Disk Management Right click on the blue rectangle in the dialog box Left click on Change Driver Letter and Paths Left click Adds (under the blank box) Left click the 'down' arrow in 'Assign.........' Choose (left click on) a letter End of problem: the drive is assigned a letter, and shows up in File Explorer!
