Sounds like you associated .exe with Notepad. You might want to look at file associations. With more info it is very hard to say for sure.

hitman1021, If your desktop shortcuts still open the applicable programs your Iconcache.db file may be corrupted. To rebuild the Iconcache.db file just restart your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Mormal mode. This will rebuild the Iconcache.db file and very well may correct your problem.

hitman1021, That's really strange. I'd try doing a System Restore to the closest date prior to when this problem started. Follow the instructions at the link below. You may also want to update your virus definitions and run a full virus scan.

hitman1021 stated "but even my system restore and virus scan is in notepad".

I'm assuming that you mean the icons for System Restore and Virus Scan are notepad icons. If you don't please explain. If it's the icons try the SAFE mode boot the restart the computer in Normal mode. This should correct the icon problem.

If your problem isn't virus/worm/trojan/pest related.

If you can start windows explorer do so if not try right clicking on the Start button and selecting Explore.

In Windows explorer go to the Tools menu item and select Folder Options.

Click on the File Types tab and scroll down the list. You should not have any associations for EXE extensions. If you do click on the that line item and look in the lower portion of the that window and reply with the "opens with" application. If it is notepad that might be your problem.

hitman1021, It wouldn't hurt to go to the link below and download & run the Fixswen.inf file.Save the fixswen.inf file to your local hard disk, right-click on the file and choose install.

"A Setup INF file to undo registry changes made by W32/Swen@MM and other threats that prevent REGEDIT, BAT, COM, EXE, PIF, REG and SCR files from running".

It's worth a try,

Marianna Schmudlach,

Thank you for being there. I attempted the fix but it did not work.

When I right click the application and use the 'Run As" I can open the application. It opens a dialog box with keys and "Protect my computer".

Please advise.
