If a head-cleaner doesn't work (maybe!), I'd start with trying another drive. Might very well work.

Probably dead

It's probably dead. Optical drives do not generally last very long, and for some reason this always seems to come as a great shock to people.

You can try some kind of lens cleaner disc, but I'm betting that won't work either, so you'll need a new drive.

Main thing you need to do is figure out if it's an IDE or SATA drive, which is really easy. An IDE drive will have a cable about 1.5-2" wide plugged into it in the back, and a SATA drive will have a cable maybe 1/4" wide. Whichever it is, go out and buy another one of the same type.
