A Couple Of Thoughts..
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / March 3, 2009 1:35 PM PST

If the drive has any age on it, we try a couple of things.

1. First, remove the upper and lower filters entries in the registry.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

2. If that doesn't help and because new DVD burners are inexpensive, we replace it with a new one.

Of course, if you happen to have a CD drive cleaner on hand, give it a shot.. If you don't have one around the place, don't buy one.. They're a little expensive and you might as well spend the money on the new drive.

Hope this helps.

I removed all DVD writing programs. When I went to edit the registry the upper and lower filters weren't even there.

Any more suggestions before I buy a new drive?

I haven't replaced the drive yet. I was holding out on that as a last resort.

And reading the posts here did you try what they write?

At 5 years you try what is in the posts then a NEW drive. Sadly I've seen people take months to swap out a failed drive. Why is that?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
