My DVD drive isn't being read correctly

by mudhonie2 / November 29, 2004 4:53 PM PST

I have a PC running XP professional with a Plextor 708a DVD drive. When I start my computer, the drive is fine and I can access my CDs and DVDs. After a few minutes, however, it stops being read and the drive itself disappears from "My Computer". I don't know what to do, help!!

Check the CD/DVD cure at:

beware it may not be your 100% solution but its a good place to start. Also, the drive itself can be at fault if too old or used alot. If this problem seemed to happened after a recent s/w install or update, use the system restore to go back to a prior date when working well. Check mtrbd. bios for updates that effect the buss, but only use if directly mentioned, a bios update is a serious consideration. Look for your OS as well in any update from the drive maker support website, related issues.

good luck -----Willy Happy

Hmmm...I tried that, and I still have the same problem of the drive not being read and basically disappearing off the "my computer" window. Any other suggestions?

I'd try another drive and see if the issue vanishes.

There are those that given the above situation will still reload the OS and try many things, but the item reads like a new drive will fix it.

Try the CD lens cleaner, but a new drive will likely be the final cure.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
