My dsl connection stops at specific times

Hi,

I've been encountering this problem for a few months. My home internet stops everyday at 8:00pm. My office which is in another building facing ours is connected to the same line. So one line is used for two different dsl routers. So they do not work together. But thats not the problem, my office closes at 4:30pm so the router over there is switched off. I have internet access at home from 4:30pm but it stops for no reason at 8:00pm even though the office router is off. The internet access comes back at around 12:00pm and sometime doesn't come back till 1:00am. I tried going to the office to test the internet there, it worked perfectly. Tried the office's router at home it didn't work (don't know if I need to change any settings for it to work even though it's on the same line). My ISP provider sent out a technician that claimed that the line cable got humid (it's been there for 30 years). But why does it work at specific times only? I don't know if this is important but my home router acted weird today; I was watching youtube today when the internet suddenly stopped (at 7:00). I went to check the router, it was trying to boot but failed every time. When I tried to turn it off i felt heat going out the power plug. While trying to unplug it I burned myself. Smoke was going out from it and it smelled like burning. I left it to rest for 5 minutes then when I plugged it again it worked perfectly.
Fyi: The line cable all come from a same room located in the bottom of the building of my home. One cable goes to my office (which have been here for less than 5 years) and another to my house.

I have two lines in my home, one with my office landline number (that is used for the internet and for calling) and another number for personal use at home (no dsl service activated). While the internet was not working i tried plugging my office line cable into my home phone but i wasn't able to use it. It displays: line in use.
I also forgot to say that my line cables all run in the same tube as the electrical cables.

And your story, have the techs go over the plugs and lines again. If you are sharing a DSL line, all bets are off about reliability. Whoever created this should be called in to go over the setup.

Again, nothing in your post tells me what is wrong except it's one odd setup. Only the person who made this thing should be contacted.

It's a dodgy setup. Get the person that did this to come back and see if they can fix it. Most companies don't do this for reliability reasons.

....or the computer you use someone has set a MAC address setting that limits the times the internet can be used by that device, in the router. Enter the router settings and look for those.

....line from your ISP? If so, how is it hooked up? Goes to the office first and then to the home? Is the home system fed it's connection from the office modem/router?

There is this room at the bottom of my building that contain all electric switches and the line cables from our isp. So the the line that is use for the internet is split up in to two lines, one that goes to my home and another that goes to my office.

Router Overheating

Hello. It looks like your router is overheating given you mentioned smoke was coming from it and a burning smell was present. Given that it disconnects from the Internet at 8:00 PM everyday and remains offline for hours before regaining connectivity and heat was felt going through the power adapter's cord, a heat-related issue is present and is causing it to stop functioning until specific components recover from heat exposure. A home network servicing two routers should not lead to overheating of routers. However, as routers age, components may begin to fail and in some cases, electrical problems could arise. The situation you described resembles an electrical issue with the router. It is best to replace the router which had the burning smell coming from it. Also, some rewiring of phone lines, Ethernet cables and power cords is best to do to separate those networking cables from electrical cables.

Like I said before I already tried the office router at home after 8:00pm but it didn't work. So the problem isn't with the router but with the weird setup.

The router didn't over heat but the power cable that goes in the router did. When unplugged it smoke was going out from the little metal part. It was too hot to touch.

If the power cable where it plugs into the router is getting that hot it says you have a bad connection.
Get a new power cable they're cheap.
Before you plug in the new cable look close at the metal tabs on the router.
If they're corroded you will need to scrape them with something like a small flat blade screwdriver.
The plug should not get hot.

sounds to me like you may have a short in the line between the internet cables and some electrical line, or a line booster that's putting to much power. It just shouldn't get that hot! Since this happens at home, but not at work, are you ever at the work area at 8pm to confirm this ONLY happens at home? I suspect you need someone to get into the electrical boxes there where the cables converge and take a long look at it all.
