What are we talking about here? A digital audio out (optical/toshlink or coaxial) connected to what?.....a receiver or a pre-amp such as in the Yamaha YSP system? Is the analog audio out working OK?
Have you thoughly checked both at the output side and the input side that the components are properly set in their menus to activate the digital jacks? Some units do not have the digital jacks live as the default setting. Check the set-up menus.
Have you checked the digital cable and replaced it with a second cable to make sure the problem is not in the cable? Optical (toslink) digital audio cables are easy to damage by bending them.
Just a few ideas for possible problem areas. Let us know what you find is the problem.

I bought my PDP-1442HD on 2/13/06, set it up in my bedroom. I could not get the digital audio out to work. There is no HDMI hooked up to cause this problem. I called Pioneer Customer support, they said I did everythink I was supposed to do. So I returned it to Costco, pickup another one. The 2nd one had the same problem, called Pioneer, they are sending a Field Tech. How could 2 random TV's have the same problem? I know how to hook up electronics, I hooked up my Panisonic 50" plasma no problems (Great Plasma) Anyone have the same problem?
