My desktop displays hundreds of icons

I have hundreds of icons on my desktop including one for each of my e-mail contacts in Windows Live Mail. I can hide them, but then I also hide all the icons (applications) I use.

How do I disable just the contact icons and only show the few desktop icons I need?

I am running Winows 7 Home Premium, updated.
