by lemontree41 / August 12, 2010 2:29 PM PDT

I have a Gateway computer that has Windows XP. I have purchased antivirus software and have downloaded and the software tells me that there are no viruses and I have analyzed and defragmented, cleaned out cookies etc. I also have high speed internet that I have thru my local telephone company. My computer continues to run very very slow. Everytime I go to even move my mouse I get error messages saying (not responding) Please help I just don;t have the finances to go out and purchase another computer at this time. also my computer is apprx. 4 or 5 yrs. old.

Thanks Anne

System check?
by RCF_Rose / August 12, 2010 4:27 PM PDT

Right click the C drive in Windows Explorer, go to Properties, then Tools and click on the Check Now button to check the volume for errors. Check the box for Automatically fix file system errors and then click the Start button. It will tell you the check will be done the next time you reboot your machine, say OK, close all open windows and reboot your machine.

When your machine reboots the Disk Check will take a while, maybe up to 15 minutes or so. Please post back telling if that made a difference or not. There are other things to try.

Try checking percentage of disk space
by ac1818 / August 12, 2010 10:02 PM PDT

Since your computer is 4-5 years old you hard drive may be close to full. If this is the case you might have to try to free some of this disk space.

Also do a disk defrag

- Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

See if this works

Take out the junk files

I think the problem is that you never cleaned your computer physically and virtually.

run any of the freeware programs like "ccleaner" or "Advance windows care" which will take out the junk files deposited in your computer over the years and also get your system cleaned from a computer repair shop at least once in 2 years.

Best Regards

does the computer have room for more RAM? Also, you could turn off
some of the visual effects by r-clicking MyComputer->Properties
->Advanced->Settings="Adjust for best performance". Some people also
delete the contents of the "Prefetch" folder and also adjust the size
of the paging file, or just set the paging virtuaal memory
file to, "system managed". I also recommend CCleaner to clean out the
