How do you mean "2 desktops installed"?
How do you mean "would that do it"?

When exactly does the cursor freeze? Sometimes it's on a black screen. Sometimes it's in the welcome screen. Sometimes it's on the desktop after logging in.

when booting up the desktop icons appear then disappear for a few seconds then reappear as if the first set were replaced. the cursor can freeze anywhere on the screen even before my desktop icons appear but always after the window which asks for my password before booting up. i cleaned the dust off the cpu. after logging on i can rarely get as far as opening a program[ my virus checker for example] before the laptop freezes up.

Try your spare administrator account. If that works OK, make a new regular account and transfer your files.
