My copied documents folder disappeared, original is trashed

Jun 14, 2006 12:19PM PDT

I was hoping someone might have some advice with regard to recovering my missing folder. Today I was working on final cut pro, and an alert came up saying I was running out of space. So I copied my documents folder of 13 gigs to my external drive. After the transfer was completed I confirmed the docs folder was there and went ahead and deleted the original off my internal drive. I am working on a powerbook 1.67 ghz, and I have a second monitor connected. Shortly thereafter both screens flashed blue, went dark then came back, but only they were mirrored. I saved my project, quit all apps and restarted. After the reboot my monitors were still mirrored, so I went into preferences and unchecked the mirror option.
Now my folder is nowhere to be found. However, I think the space it is taking up is still being calculated.
I ran data rescue on my internal drive , in hopes of retrieving the deleted original doc folder.
After the thorough scan nothing seemed to happen.
I selected show report, then report file/folder info, and the program crashed. I am now running a thorough scan on the external drive.
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?
thanks.

Missing Docs

No idea what happened there.

When you say that you trashed your documents folder, do you mean the whole folder and not just some of the contents? The documents folder contains a few bits and pieces for programs. Just wondering if they could have caused this problem.
Does the external drive appear on the desk top?
Disconnect the second monitor for a while and check the second drive is mounted. If you have something like DIsk Warrior, it would be an idea to run that on the external.

the entire contents of the folder...

Thanks for responding so swiftly. I dragged the folder over as a copy function. As soon as the docs folder copied I deleted the contents of my original folder.
I'll disconnect the monitor, I don't have a disk utilities program...only a free download of data rescue...
My harddrive is mounted, and is currently running through a catalogue scan.
I've never used rescue before, is it worth this wait?

Never used Rescue either

my first line of attack on that drive would have been Disk Warrior and possibly TechTool Pro.
Hopefully you mean that you checked to see if the copy function actually worked before deleting the original.

I am a little concerned that the copied folder does not appear on the external. Could still be directory problems though.

Keep us informed

Good luck
