Question

My computer won't start up after I changed one of the hdd

Jul 4, 2016 8:13AM PDT

Hey,

I just installed Windows 10 on my pc and thought it would be great to change one of the smaller hdd.
I erased everything on it and then turned the pc completly off.
When I had changed it the pc didn't want to start up again. It starts up for about a few seconds. Without video signal and then it shutsdown again. This process goes on without any change.

I tried to change everything back to the original position. It still won't start.
The SSD with operativsystem on it has not been touched.

Thanks for the help! Grin
Patrik

Answer
This does not sound like a software issue.

The make, model was left out so I'll take it this was a home built PC. For those I always check the CMOS battery voltage (about one minute to check at the bench) and then move to unplug all cards and memory to see if it will power up and stay up.

My next move depends on the result of that test. If it won't stay up, we pull the motherboard out for the old check the mounting posts check and power up just the motherboard on cardboard test.

You get the idea so let's hear more.

Just sounds like a PC in need of repair.

Looks like a hardware issue. When we get those we downsize the machine until it stays up.

tried to pick it apart

I tried the best i could.
removed the hard disks, graphic card, and cd rom. I don't know what else i could remove?
It had the same result.
But now without the click noise...

I tried to search online to find a step by step guide or something.

I have gotten it to the boot move (f1) One time earlier when i tried. so it must still be alive... I hope.

Remember that I am pretty much a noob when it comes to this.

I never found a step by step either.

There are thousands of tutorials on working a dead PC but here I have to go with the usual.

Downsize it and keep going smaller. For me I get it down to the PSU and motherboard on cardboard (no case is needed) and if it won't stay up with just 2 parts I'm looking at 1 or 2 bad parts.

Have you gotten it down to that few parts yet?

Definitely a hardware issue

The click noise you describe coming from the computer is the optical drive, which makes that noise when it boots up; Perfectly normal. I would leave the graphics card in the machine because you won't be able to see anything on screen without it! Cleaning out the PC (Using compressed air only) and firmly re-seating all components (graphics card, SSD, and optical drive) might fix your problem as you may have jolted something loose when you took out the hard drive. It's odd that it would stop working right after you took the hard drive out of the computer, which makes me think you may have knocked something loose.

Anyways, try that and see what happens. Good luck!
