Question

My computer won't display anything after RAM removal and rep

Mar 26, 2017 1:11PM PDT

Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz
Asus Z170-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

I've had this computer for about two months now, and yesterday I notice that one of my RAM stick were not working properly. I had checked them to be fine when I first constructed the computer.

I went to switch the slots of the ram to see if it was a slot problem, and after I did it it stop displaying anything. I'm sure I touched the case before removing anything, but maybe I still shorted something somehow.

I've already tried a few things to fix the problem, but they have not worked.

1. Placing RAM back in Original slots.
2. Placing 1 RAM card into a slot (both)
3. Using the Motherboards display ports
4. Resetting BIOS? (by removing the CMOS battery for 30-40 seconds)

More details.

All my LEDs light up, so my mouse, headset, etc. Including the ones on the Motherboard itself.

This is what we call The Dead PC.

We have to try a simple CMOS reset first (remove battery is one way, look in the motherboard manual for the other way. Then reduce the machine to less parts.

BUT I've had good luck with CPU seating issues so after the basics are checked (CMOS, see if the motherboard does not have extra mounting studs and we try without GPU and much else) I'll pull the CPU out and look at the pins and pads to check for issues then put it back together.

Soft Reset Problems.

My Motherboard didn't come with a cap to connect the two pins for the RTC reset method, is there some other way to do this?

Small world.

My old HP D5000T doesn't come up with the cap on the RTC reset pins either. It does however reset the values after I move the cap off and try again.

There is no cap

I don't understand what you mean. The reset on mine does require the two pins to be connected, I just don't have a way i know of to connect them.

Ahh, clearer.

The pins can be bridged with almost anything like a small screwdriver tip or such. It doesn't require a cap. In the shop I use my pen tip to do this most of the time since it's something I have handy when I work the machines.

Still nothing

I'd done this with both RAM sticks in both slot 1 and slot 4 (Slot 4 is the only one that was confirmed working last checked)

It's possible

The display won't turn on, and one of the RAM sticks weren't showing up before so it's more than possible.
