Dec 11, 2005 9:02AM PST

i was uninstalling aol from my not even a year old dell 8400 and it was rebooting but during, I tripped over the cord and pulled the plug out the socket and now it won't start in safe mode, and it says unmountable boot volume. someone told me that i should format my computer but i dont know how. i went to set up and change the boot sequence for CDROM to be first because i put the operating system disk but it didnt work and i have tried all that i could think of.

I am truly sorry this happened but from my standpoint, I admit, I let out a little chuckle when first reading your post as this happened to my son, and brought me back to that for a second. It's one of those comedic pictures you get in your mind. <I truly mean no offense though.>
That said, you can try this

I do think it will work for you.
Let me know, take care, Paul

Have You Booted With The XP CD Yet?
Feb 10, 2009 1:18PM PST

Place the CD in the DVD/CD Rom drive, then restart the computer.. Assuming you have set the BIOS to boot first for the DVD/CD drive, after pressing "Any Key" to start the cd boot, you should first see it "Loading Files", then you should see a "Welcome to XP Setup" at the top of the screen where options are given. Pressing the R option gives you the Recovery Console..

By the way, are you aware you have posted to a thread which is over three years old..? I doubt you will receive a response from the original poster.

Hope this helps.
