I find Microsoft goofs updates from time to time. The thing you will encounter are folk that think that Microsoft has this wired. Sorry no.
Until we see the KB NUMBER of the update I'm going with another misfire.
For example I run into Office update failures all the time. The demo version in the PC won't let such an update apply yet it tries, fails and creates income for support folk worldwide.
There's a lesson there.
Allow me to first say that I am not the brightest penny in your pocket, but I believe I have tried about all I know and thus I bring it to you.
I have a Dell Studio 1749 laptop, 64 bit, running Windows 7. There is 372 GB free of 454 GB on the C drive. Only one drive.
I try to run updates when recommended at shut down. the most recent update fails to update and has failed to update for some time. So I thought there may be a virus. I got McAfee free from my cable provider and I hear that I should look into other programs, So I also have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I ran those, tried to install updates and Failed again.
I then remembered seeing Windows Update in my start menu. So I go there and find MicrosoftFixit50123, hoping that this might fix it so I can update this important update. No, sadly it doesn't. As a last ditch effort I thought I should run a backup earlier than I normally would and still no update.
What am I missing?
