Question

My computer will not fully open to windows after anti virus.

Nov 29, 2014 8:08AM PST

My Dell Vostro 220 desktop running windows vista home basic 32 bit goes to the boot screen and I see the windows bar then it goes black with the pointer which will move but no commands work like CLT alt del. safe mode will just go to same black screen and repair computer does the same. I've tryed boot disc and intallation disc but same black screen. I have run diagnostics and it tells me there isn't any issues booting to O S . When Iolo system shield blocked 11 virus and malware quarantined and removed threats it must have removed something important to the startup process. What do I do now? I've got important stuff backed up in the cloud but I can't get the computer to let me do anything. Anyone ever come across this before? Any help would be appericiated, thank you.

Ask them how to fix it. My thought is it blew up the OS. I can't guess which OS DVD you have but many Dells back them would let us boot and try a repair install. But let a car with a flat tire you never know if the owner carries repair tools.

If you forgot to backup your files, we can address that with other bootable OSes and then proceed to a full reinstall.

it could be the fact that the virus got wedged into your start up launcher and the quickest way to fix that is to run a back-up restore or maybe even flashing your bios once, sorry to hear about this.

Unfortunately most everyone didn't read carefully, I don't have any control after the black screen. No commands work,no safe mode, repair computer says its booting ok but goes to black screen. Iolo says it has a fix that there sending for free, but it's been a month and I've call 4 times and still no disc. They have said there was a mix up the1st time I called, the 2nd time they said it would be here in 7 days,3rd time they said everything was all set and my disc would be here in a few days,4th call they said I gave them the wrong address, which was on the email they sent me. Unbelievable, I have to call a 5th time. I'm about ready to do a clean install,as I have everything backed up in the cloud and on disc. Iolos system shield must have done this to quite a few computers to have a fix on a disc. I'm at the end of my rope! Thank goodness I have a ipad and a laptop, but I use the desktop almost they exclusively. What stinks is I like System mechanic pro but I hate there support. 4 years ago there support was pretty good but not it is very poor. James Mountain

I see Iolo and that's known to create more troubles than it solves. Since it can do deep damage you are left with calling them to fix it or just start over.

James,

Bob wrote Iolo creates more problems than it solves. I would invite you to read what's in Iolo's Knowledge Base and then read the (entire) thread I posted below it. Decide for yourself.

You will find this (specifically) listed under System Mechanic Pro. It reads in part:

After a recent virus definition update and scan my computer exhibits one or more of the following behaviors: -black screen where only the cursor is visible. Clicking on the link brings you to a support article titled, "RPCSS.DLL Quarantined"

I'm unable to ascertain whether it was a "one time thing", or an ongoing issue with SMP. I see no date the article was posted. The reason I mention it ....

Read "Black screen with cursor O/S Vista", which was posted at a forum less than 2 months ago. Unless it's your post, this poster was also told there was a fix for it, but Iolo never provided it. In his final post he notes, despite the fact Iolo stated it was the fault of his A/V, it was System Mechanic Pro that deleted (or quarantined) the System File (RPCSS.DLL)

I'm NOT saying with certainty it's your specific problem, but (if nothing else) it's a good example of a similar one. Certainly worth investigating, though.

Best of luck,
Carol
