Question

My computer restarts and freezes randomly

Jul 20, 2016 11:42AM PDT

For the past few months my computer would just randomly restart on its own. I wouldn't get a blue screen, it would just reboot. Sometimes it can stay on for hours and others it just restarts after 20 minutes. And every so often it will just freeze and I have to restart it. I've tried anti-virus scans, got a new power supply, and bought multiple fans. I've only had this computer a little less than 2 years. Please Help!

Let's hear the PC details.

I've run into far too many AMD builds like this. They're fine and later like this we are putting in new motherboards. The owners ask why.

That total memory is a clue.

I don't see how you have both 8GB and that total. Try it with a single stick of memory. All memory sticks must be same make and model.

Sorry, the 6063 MB is the GPU memory

Still an odd thing.

No 750 I've seen has that much onboard memory. Must be something else. But I'll take it as a clue. Which Video Driver version?

Are you using Geforce Experience?

How do I check to see what version my video driver is and if Im using Geforce Experience

I think Nvidia answers that at link.

How would I change my driver version?

- Collapse -
That's on the web.
Jul 21, 2016 10:36AM PDT

Most discussions have you download the driver you want to run, then the usual graphic driver uninstaller or cleaner, then run the cleaner and then install the driver of your choice.

Nvidia has older versions for folk that encounter a bug.

https://www.google.com/search?q=nvidia+driver+rollback+cleaner+remover finds those prior discussions in case you are new to searching.

Try it without Chrome.

I uninstalled chrome and have been using Microsoft Edge. So far nothing has happened and it hasn't froze. That might have fixed it. Thanks, I'll get back to you if anything goes wrong.

Chrome is not bad or such.

It does however tap PCs hard on memory and more. You'll find the other browsers have a lighter load and it can let you eek by until you find what's up.

CPU
Jul 26, 2016 11:18AM PDT

Would getting a new cpu completely fix the problem?

- Collapse -
I'm going with no.
Jul 26, 2016 11:26AM PDT

The machine is typical of a system we don't care for at the shop. The owners chase issues like this and you can't be sure what part it is as the makers have rather lacking diagnostics. That said it's been a long list of things over the years. Many subpar power supplies, dust, cracked heatsink compound, old fans and motherboards.

It has rarely been the CPU. In fact a few years without a bad CPU so my bet would not be on the CPU.

Replacement
Jul 27, 2016 7:16PM PDT

Is there any part of the computer that I could replace to fix the problem?

I listed the typical items.

As that was not clear enough I think it's either a repair counter, a new PC or changing the parts you suspect.

I have finally fixed the problem. Turns out I had 2 very old power strips that couldn't handle the PC, so I replaced them and now its working perfectly. Thank you for your help and time though Grin

That psu is a dual rail unit.
It may not have been a good pick with a 125w cpu.
A single rail unit would have been better.

Since the machine is 2 yrs old get a can of compressed air and give the innards a good cleaning.

Pay attention to any heat sinks as they can get loaded with crud.

Leave the side panel off and test.

Then you should replace it with another computer which doesn't freeze randomly.
