1. It's too easy to get file system damage (and we have the free tools noted at the top of this forum.)
2. It turns out the lifespan was shorter than we wanted.
Sorry, I forgot to explain this. The file system FAT32 and these drives corrupt easily. This is why folk keep talking to you about backup copies.

About a week and a half ago I made a 90's playlist and saved it one my thumb drive and I plug it into my xbox and use it for music while I play games. It worked fine when I did that and haven't put it into my laptop til about 2 days ago and now it says it needs to be formatted. Why? I didn't download anything to change my computer or the device, and I am not losing all that music I spent a few hours putting on there. Now I'm supposed to get music for a friends wedding on thier USB thumb drive and my computer says I'd have to format there's too. Can anyone explain why it's doing this?
