my computer page doesent see usb drive

by estudenski / August 24, 2005 4:46 AM PDT

When I insert my usb flash memory drive no drive designation appears on the my computer page and I have no way of accessing the flash memory content The safely remove utility frequently says "general ???" is running, wait. Frequently power to the flash memory stays on and removal of the usb unit is not complete!
I think that this started when I installed Photoshop elements 3 and responded to a pop up appearing on insertion of my usb flash that said "use this program to open and had a checked box that said always..."
Is there any way to cancel this "always use this program to open" rule ??

I was referring to the association between a file type and a program. However, this may not be the problem because I reviewed the file types under "tools" and the associations are to windows viewer and not photoshop. I get 2 icons foe drive s f and g on statrup on "my computer" , these request insertion of a disk, but do not recognize one if inserted. They dissappear on usage of the safe removal program. Reinsertion of a flash card or memory fails to generate an icon on "my computer".

Did the flash drive work previously? Is the flash drive USB 1.1 or USB 2.0?

Re Flash drive not shown..

What make and model of flash drive ? Some flash drives require a driver to be installed; if so, try reinstalling. Also check whether you have fully inserted the drive into the USB port. Have you tried the drive at another USB port, or at another computer ? Instead of at ''My Computer'', are you able to access the drive with Windows Explorer ?

Be sure your PC is USB 2.0 enabled. If you have an older PC with USB 1.1, it will not see a USB 2.0 flash drive. You'd have to install a USB 2.0 card (w/drivers).
