My Computer, My Documents, My Network, Etc. Folders Go Dead

Aug 22, 2007 4:33PM PDT

I have a minor problem on several PCs (XP Pro SP2) in the PC Lab I maintain.

Any of the XP (new style) folders opened from the Start Menu -- My Computer, My Documents, My Network, etc. -- opens fine when clicked. However, using any of the links in the left pane of the open window results in the next window having only the left pane appear -- the right pane is blank and simultaneously the whole window freezes and must be forced closed.

Strangely, for example, My Documents opens My Documents as expected. Clicking "Parent Folder" opens Desktop just fine, with everything as it should be. However, attempting to open Desktop with the link in the left pane just results in a dead window with no contents showing in the right pane.

All of the "My ....." folder windows behave the same -- as long as you do not use the links in the left pane, they work fine.

Does anyone know a fix for this?
