Question

my computer is stuck in a sleep mode, or hibernation state!

I have an Alienware x51 desktop with windows seven, recently my computer went into what I thought was sleep, my power button is lit and my front usb ports are putting out power because I use them to charge small items, other than that the computer is completely unresponsive. I have pressed my mouse buttons, pressed my space bar, unplugged the power supply and left it unplugged for several hours before plugging it back in, when I plug it back in I do not even need to press the power button and as soon as the cord is plugged in it goes straight to this sleep mode, the led lights on the sides are not lit and the fans are not running, I have held down the power button until it powers down and as soon as I press it back to this sleep mode. That's all I can get it to do. Someone please help.

This could be a serious problem. Turn it off, disconnect the hard disk and turn it on again. Normally the BIOS will tell you it can't find a hard disk. Then find your Windows 7 DVD, put it in, reboot again and see if it will boot from that.

Tell us what happens.

sounds like dead CPU

Have you tried to see if the BIOS can be accessed?

bios

I cannot access the bios menu, when I press the power button it doesn't even try to boot it just sits there with power button lit and the front usb ports still charge small items

So that's some hardware issue.

Have it repaired or buy another PC.

sounds more like the CPU

In reply to: bios

Accessing the BIOS is the most basic thing on a motherboard one can do, but if it can't be accessed, then either the CPU is burnt or no power to it. Having power to USB, gives a greater possibility the CPU is dead. Still, if you have a cheap CPU around that fits the motherboard you could try that in it to be sure, but if it's dead due to burnout from overheat, then likely the motherboard is damaged too. You could try another PSU just to be sure, but if it won't power up from that, then definitely burned CPU.

Check memory

Check that the memory sticks are seated properly.
Was anything done to the PC right before this happened (new hardware, software, cleaning)?
