My computer has frozen on the black screen during start-up

I have a 4 yr old Dell dimension 3000 running windows XP. While working in Word, it kept shutting down my program whenever I copy and pasted anything. I figured I would just restart the computer to work out this kink but now it won't finish the boot. I have tried to restart it in safe mode also with no results. It stays black with my mouse arrow sitting in the middle of the screen.

Have You Tried The Universal Word Fix?

In reply to: My computer has frozen on the black screen during start-up

Do a search on the computer for a file named: normal.dot . (Yes, that's "normal dot dot".) When the search finds any files named "normal.dot", then delete them all.. Restart the computer and reopen Word.. A new, clean "normal.dot" file will be created and will hopefully cure the issue.

If the above doesn't cure the problem, please tell us the version of Word/Office that you're using.. In addition, make sure to install the most recent Service Pack for your version of Office. That may helps as well.

Hope this helps.

I would if I could

In reply to: Have You Tried The Universal Word Fix?

unfortunately, my computer won't finish loading windows. I get the Dell logo during startup, then nothing else. No shortcut icons, no start menu, nothing. Just a black screen that I can move my cursor around on. This goes on for an hour until I get mad and hold the power buttin for 5 secs to turn it off again. This has never happened before, but I guess A computer store can charge me an arm and a leg to fix. Thanks anyway :^(

Tried 'Last Known Good' ?

In reply to: I would if I could

Immediately after you see the Dell logo, press the F8 key, once per second, till a selection screen loads. Use the up/down arrows to select "Last Known Good Configuration", then press the Enter key.. The computer will find the last registry that worked and restart to restore the old registry.

And since your problem appears more like an overall issue than just something with Word, let us know which antispyware tools you've used..

Hope this helps.

In reply to: Tried 'Last Known Good' ?

NEVER SAW THE "LAST KNOWN GOOD" BEFORE, BUT WILL NEVER FORGET IT NOW. AS SOON AS THE COMPUTER FINISHED LOADING, THERE IT WAS! A ROGUE ANTIVIRUS SHORTCUT ICON TRYING TO DISGUISE ITSELF AS MY LEGIT SOFTWARE. RAN MY MALWAREBYTE, MCAFEE, AND SPYBOT; AND POOF... ALL GONE!

THANKS,
MISSY
