General discussion

my computer doesnt like me :(

Mar 6, 2004 11:32AM PST

hello.. i am having wierd problems...
well 1st of all my computer just switches off randomly (not shutdown) on its own and then doesnt turn back on for a few minutes.. unless i switch off - on the SMPS.
Also sometimes after reboot i get wierd beeps from my radeon card saying that its power is not connected.
then after trying 2-3 times it works and the computer boots..
and now lately ive been getting (although rarely )high frequency whining (similar to the noise of the cpu fan on high RPM) noises from my HDD and i get blue screen errors on atapi.sys

here is my configuration

local company 400W SMPS
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
MSI KT4AV (KT400A)
266mhz 512mb DDR RAM
Sony DRU530A DVD-RW
Samsung 52Max CD-ROM
ATI Radeon 9800
Seagate Baracuda 40GB HDD
Samsung 20GB

1. 400W PSUs are rarely 400. It's why I skip all that and move to 450 or bigger. I don't think this is your issue, but always note it. Reference -> http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/

2. Pull the case cover off, point a fan at the internals and retest. If you don't do this, we'll never know.

thankx ill try this.. if it is overheating i have no idea how because it also shuts down when the airconditioner is on and immediately after i boot (after the failure) ive checked cpu temperature in the bios and its pretty normal.. 50-60

50 to 60 IMMEDIATELY after boot could be far from the temp

a few minutes later.

I agree. 50 to 60 IMMEDIATELY after boot sounds high to me.

Something's fishy. Proceed with extreme care. AMD Athlons tend to die without a heatsink and the power on in about 1 second.
